Labels are tricky. Our chickens in their current setup technically produce organic, free-range, and soy free eggs (pushing about $7/doz at the store). These girls will eventually be in a mobile coop on pasture and moved to new ground daily. The coop you see here will then only be used during inclement weather or as a brooder.

Pastured raised eggs go for $9/doz at the store here, but (as usual) not all pasture raised eggs are created equal.

Technically, you can say the chickens are pastured raised if they have access to a certain amount of outdoor area (108sqft per bird is a number I’ve seen quoted a few times). That alone is a substantial improvement from typical free-range (on average 2-3sqft per bird in the factory farm model).

Ours have 105sqft per hen in the run. 89sqft per bird when you factor the two roosters- Kip & Ken. The coop alone is 10x10 on the ground, but they have lots of options off the ground for roosting, laying, and playing. If we just kept our chickens locked in the coop 24/7, they would have a little over 7 square feet per bird on the ground. Funny how it’s free-range either way, but a substantial difference in quality of life and food to have access to the run. It’s another standard deviation improvement to keep them moving on fresh ground.

Regenerating, rather than degrading the land AND having the healthiest/happiest birds requires moving them to new ground daily. The daily movement is often called “intensive management” - it’s the key to the regenerative engine and unlocking natural abundance.

This past weekend we got chickens 💕 probably going to get a few more this weekend. The chicken addiction is real.
1-2 months until we start getting eggs from these girls 🥚
Up next: Building chicken tractors (stay tuned for a video of this process!) and getting broilers!
I can’t wait until we have plates full of our own chicken meat and eggs.

My first 10 snaps from @belgiumracing 2023 - more to come

On one hand, I never get enough photos (thank you @bifffy_ for picking up the slack), but on the other, the camera never does it justice.

Enjoy!

Last day in Belgium with the guys. What an amazing group! I’d take these guys anywhere.

Here’s some pictures that mean “Belgium” to me from this trip.

I love working with athletes who are trying to be the best that they can be.
