Tidawhitney Lek is a Cambodian- American figurative painter who is one of the most promising visual artists in the contemporary art world. Based in Los Angeles, where she grew up, she tackles themes of identity, migration, belonging, and domesticity. Lek is an important voice of the southeast Asian artistic diaspora tackling subjects such as Southeast Asian immigrant experience, generational trauma, global political histories, and feminist narratives.

thank you for this inspiring studio visit @tidawhitney. Thanks @jobertbp for scheduling this visit.

Collectors with an eye for watches often have an eye for art too. Can you guess the artist?

A 2016 look-back? Fine with me!
Here are a few pictures from what was somehow now a decade ago.

2. Annual Golden Week Photographer BBQ ! These were fun.

3. My cat with her then new cat house, a cardboard M2 from a pet store (4).
She never liked it as much as I did.

5. My $900 Pentax 67II setup & $250 gold Contax T2. Camera prices were like that, then. I later traded the Pentax for a GF670 and sold the T2 to a friend at cost.

6. @bigbigbig_b with his Titanium M9.

7. @johnson167 with a BP M2 and Summicron 35.

8. I was loaned a Summarit 35 f2.4 for a month- had I met that lens before the Summicron I’d probably still be using it. Fantastic little lens!

9. First trip to Hawaii. Had my Black Paint MP then.

10 & 11. Scenes from “Co-Nekotation Era”, a group exhibition with @seanmarclee & @masayuki.nakaya about the loves of our lives: Partners, Cats, and Photography. This was a great show...

12. Araki signed the inside of my M6 baseplate, shown here by my friend’s daughter after our gallery visit.

13. An amazing coat on a tourist from China in the Shinagawa Prince lobby. Cheers if you get the reference (bonus for quotes).

14. Yodobashi still sold expired film at discount— me and some pals bought out their 5000 yen bulk-roll stock.

15. @ed.templeton & @deannatempleton at a book signing at Book Marc. I think this was the first night we had met! I met them in Shinjuku and in the cab to Harajuku I, having known Ed as an artist, asked if he did much skateboarding before. Turns out he HAD.

2016 was pretty good! I had already been in Japan for twelve years. The internet was still fun- there were still blogs and Tumblr was amazing & Instagram wasn’t Algo-driven, so there was a sense of serendipity (esp. with Recent Hasgtags) that’s long been de-optimized. Even better? Film & paper prices were ok and there was a ¥99/ $1 exchange rate.

That new Fuji Instax has a “decade dial” on the side- with a lot of what’s happening in 2026 sometimes I wouldn’t mind turning it a click back...
