I started making art 7 years ago. I didn’t consider myself to be an artist back then. Mostly I was just some 20-something-year old-girl who was hurting and at her lowest. Someone who didn’t think she’d still be here. But she is— and truthfully, the weight of that still hangs heavy in my chest sometimes.

For some of us there’s a quiet shift that happens
where your brain tends to place things on either side of a hard line between The Before, and The After. My Before exists as bits and pieces of very hazy, very painful memories. Ones where I’m sitting in a common room making drawing after drawing with crayola markers because it’s all I was really allowed to do— while the same movie plays on the tv for a week straight. And there’s this complete stranger that turns to me and says “you know, your drawings are pretty cool. You should do something with that once you get out of here.”

I didn’t know it yet, but that one comment would serve as the start of my After. Creating became a space where I could pour all of my feelings out onto a page and begin the process of untangling all of the things that had slowly eaten away at me for years. All of the behaviors, people, and environments where I was made to feel small and go silent. I say this often, but art has truly saved my life. I don’t know where or who I’d be without it. To the girl that went from drawing at the kitchen counter with some charcoal pencils and pens purely for herself and her healing, to the one that did the brave thing and put herself and her work out there. The one who got her name in an art magazine for the first time 2 years ago today (on September 15th as I type this.) To AM, and The After that’s still being written. Becoming and learning and living on the hard line. To what has happened, and everything still to come.

Tell your people you love them every chance you get.

(Older art from many moons ago that I’ve never posted. May or may not make individual posts for some of them in the future, but who knows.)

(Here’s to Suicide Prevention Month, Hispanic Heritage Month— and Free Palestine.)

@belltownblast is just so cool. Always amazing to watch how much can be accomplished by artists making murals. These are some but not all in progress and completed.
