Issue #47 - Out Now!

In this issue, we send postcards with videographer Gnarly Newton, talk puppets and cagoules with musician Jaime Rosso and get wet at an intertidal allotment with artist Andrew Merritt. Elsewhere, we get the inside track on curating Ashford’s Create Music Village, run away to Santus Circus and ruff it out with the Rogue Shakespeare. Plus much, much more.

ISSUE #46 OUT NOW!

Make it your task this July/August to go and visit a Kent town that you’ve never been to before. Take in the sights, sounds, shops, arts and festivals. Take a punt.

In this issue, so many of our subjects did exactly that - stuck their neck out and said ‘let’s do it’. Former doorman turned musician Charlie Jeer did it, the team at The Art Club in Dover headed back to the high street when many told them not to, while photographer Chris McAndrew risked the wrath of a national newspaper during his first professional shoot!

Plus we take a stroll with ParkBathe, get addicted to tufting with Ellen Russell and discover Kent’s own cabinet of mysteries with Esoteric Isle!

We have @_winerocks_ , @omdhq ,
Sound Scout Reviews, Evolution Branded Clothing, Bite Club and much, much more!

We also have a whole Discover Summer section!

"Who are we? Where have we been? Where are we going?

The Discovery Stage is the 'You Are Here' festival's emerging talent stage. Featuring local alternative music artists who are doing things their own way, where they are. From 12.30 today/Saturday.

Featuring:
New Custodians - Youth band, from the @rockstarexperiencecic youth club*

@thekingfisher_band - "Laid back jazz/funk fusion group consisting of drums, guitar and alternating wind and brass soloists. All of our sets are improvised and rely on the chemistry between the members to create the music."

Gombo- "Kent based 5 piece Rock n' Roll band, Future Makers RAH Finalists 2025"

Brothers Bula - "Bexhill's greatest living musicians, internationally renowned for their multi-faceted musical style and avant-garde anti-aesthetic. Brothers since birth..." brothersbula.co.uk

@chorusesfrom - Glitchy and Lo-fi deconstructed dance music.

@thing_detector - "Kent based boundary pushing electronic music collective."

Curated by @bigcheesearts_ , a grassroots and independent music culture promoter, based in East Kent. Presented in partnership with @art31kent Generate Programme at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre.

@rockstarexperiencecic delivers inclusive music workshops - not just about making noise, but a unique opportunity for creativity, attitude, expression and connection. It's about giving participants the tools, confidence, and community to find their creative voice and express themselves with their music. New Custodians is an example of that - a group
of young musicians that have honed their craft with The Rockstar Experience, and we're so proud to see them performing a set of their own original material.

We start day 2 with young bands from across Kent on the Discovery and Rockstar stages. Deep Listen showcase ambient, minimal and experimental music followed by the best in synthesisers and sound art with @coastalelectronauts, @iamjoshmagill brings his soulful melodies as he releases his second album before we’re invaded by the joyful electro-alien that is @paddy_steer (the lovechild of Frank Sidebottom and Sun Ra). Next, @splink.band bring their space-folk-psych-rock vibes with a mischievous spirit, that ramps up to the explosion of electro-disco camp chaos that is @chewyshe and her dancers. And we finish with a plunge into the wild polyrhythmic African griot-punk of @avalanchekaito

Exploring the points of the musical map that make up the debut edition of You Are Here. We continue with @bigcheesearts_

*Could you introduce yourself?*

I am Jack Coleman. I'm 27 years old. I'm a queer, grassroots, local music promoter based in Canterbury, formerly based in Medway. You Are Here resonates with the ideas that I had where it's about platforming new emerging talent, giving them that first access or sort of continued access to stages, particularly in Kent where the options are few and far between, especially in somewhere like Canterbury. This festival feels like a nice way to resist that current social movement and start a reversal of that, the harm that has been done due to multiple economic issues.

*Why is Kent important to you?*

I think living also in the shadow of London is an interesting theme which crops up and definitely affects our music scene, which is why I think it’s important to look to make our own scene stand on its own legs. We want to be sustainable where we are and to not feed more into the metropole of London, which is slowly creeping more towards us. I think there's lots about ‘kentishness’ and being from where we are that is important to celebrate as unique.

*Who will you be presenting as part of this weekend?*

I’ve been put in charge of the discovery stage (which I've had some support with) - youths, young people and first access to stages are all baked into my general practice as a promoter. The stage is an extension of that and putting it in a Kent-wide context and couching it within this festival feels meaningful because there's like a clear through line of first access musicians up to the headliners.
