(LIQUID TELEVISION FULL SHORT: The Big City by Ed Bell/airing on the January 1st, 1995 edition of MTV's Liquid Television, the last episode of Liquid Television at that) 👾

Ed Bell is a veteran animator and director known for his award-winning career spanning major studios like Disney, Pixar, and HBO - he worked on The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse alongside many of the people who went on to make Ren & Stimpy, Batman The Animated Series and Tiny Toon Adventures!

The art style is immediately recognizable to me because of the fact that he's worked on so many recognizable series in the past, of course that's just me.

Anywho, in this short, we follow an African woman who travels to America in search of a better life - it explores her encounters with new people and sights within a vibrant, neon cityscape.

It is worth noting that Creator Ed Bell intended the show to focus on the necessity of family and the building of relationships within the Black community.

Like many other animations within Liquid TV, that avant-garde aesthetic is the name of the game here and it really doesn't get much better than this, I do understand it's not everyone's cup of tea and that's okay.

But yeah - this one is one of the longer Liquid Television showcases at just a little over 5 minutes long and it's warranted in this case, in my opinion - absolutely outstanding work! 👏🏽

The 21 color-script (part 1)

Developing the color design for The 21 took time to refine. Early on, many of my development sketches were overly saturated. To help guide the palette, iconographer Nikola Sarić created color reference, which I placed on the right side of the color script as a constant reminder.

I’m deeply grateful to the many talented artists who contributed to shaping the film’s color design, including Nikola Sarić, Alexandra Roll, Wanichaya “Mai” Phraejunya, Rommel Ruiz, Alypius Loft, Andrew Aziz, Amber Kenneson, Edmon Kamel, Ed Bell, Erini Fahim, Emilie Bach, among others.
