El día de hoy Perlita y yo fuimos a explorar.
Buscamos inspiración entre la arcilla, el sol y el viento cálido que nos acariciaba las mejillas. La tierra comienza a despertar después de un invierno muy frío y el sol calienta nuestras espaldas.
Así comienza este nuevo ciclo de Maíz, Agua, Tierra y Vida.

Today, Perlita and I went exploring.
We sought inspiration amidst the clay, the sun, and the warm wind that caressed our cheeks. The earth is beginning to awaken after a very cold winter, and the sun warms our backs.
Thus begins this new cycle of Corn, Water, Earth, and Life.

“Women: Hood,” a community-based collective art project, has officially begun the fourth phase with support from @bigfieldfund through @p_s_won. It’s a big step for us! We are aiming to release “Women: Hood” Fourth Phase, featuring the new inter view video clip and its responsive artworks (2D, 3D, and performance.) in the fall.

“My name is Narciso Meneses Elizalde. I’m from Hidalgo, Mexico. For the past few years, I’ve lived and worked in and around what are now Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, in the United States. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Along with the Paper Revitalizers working group, I received a Big Field Fund grant last year. We’ve been developing our amate paper production project in the Sierra Otomí-Tepehua, and I’m currently producing a documentary about the project, which will premiere in Iowa later this year.”

Artist Statement:
I create polymer clay sculptures and writing through which I promote and celebrate the values and worldviews of Mesoamerican peoples. The themes that inform my work revolve around traditional Indigenous ritual practices, especially regarding themes of world renewal and participation in universal webs of relationships, as manifested through the Mundos Floridos spirituality. These and related forms of expression are often referred to as Costumbres (Customs), and have been practiced and created in what is now called Mesoamerica, the American Southwest, and beyond, from time immemorial to the present. The primary intention of my works is to promote and celebrate Mesoamerican peoples and their values, and especially ancestral customs and the ritual specialists who maintain them.

Super thrilled to develop a site-responsive installation in this space at the Iowa City City Park historic cabins. Thankful to co-curators Nicholas Cladis and Sugimoto Hiroshi for the invitation. I'm excited to see what all the artists have at various sites for this Iowa Art Field project.

I’m excited for the first iteration of our ‘Meandering River’ performance today! All 80 tickets are already booked, but I still wanted to share. For those hoping for another opportunity to see it, we will have a second iteration on September 20, as part of the Infinite Dream festival.

‘Meandering River’, an immersive, site-specific performance, invites audiences to reimagine their relationship with the Iowa River through movement, sound, and guided exploration. Rooted in the idea of the hydrocommons as the dynamic relationship between water and bodies, this project offers a powerful, multi-sensory experience that explores the entangled ecologies of humans, nonhumans, and the infrastructures that shape our lived environment.

Location: Iowa City, Iowa—along the Iowa River, from the Lagoon Shelter House to the Park Road bridge

Through this experience, participants are invited to cultivate lasting attentiveness to the living river—its layered histories, shifting geographies, and continued presence in our lives.

The newest thing I would like to share, and the one I am beyond excited about and grateful for, is the fantastic news that my joint project with @colectivo_jaitsibi, which we titled "La Fuerza del Papel Amate," in collaboration with @alejandro.mugu, @nicholascladis, Indigenous Ñuhu ritual/spiritual specialists (known as bädi) in the Otomi-Tepehua Highlands, and traditional paper makers from San Pablito Pahuatlan, was selected to receive the new regional grant program Big Field Fund!!! Our collaborative group, which we named Revitalizadores del Papel, will work to revitalize amate paper production and utilization among the Ñuhu (or Yuhu) people in the Otomi-Tepehua Highlands, Hidalgo, and surrounding communities. We will have active traditional paper makers from San Pablito Pahuatlan come to a community (still to be determined) in the Otomi-Tepehua Highlands to lead workshops on the production of amate paper. We will initiate paper production for both traditional ritualism and craft implementation, and I will bring some of the latter back to Iowa. The whole process will be recorded, and we will produce a video documentary. We will also work towards bringing a ritual specialist and an art collective member here to Iowa with provisional permits for a formal project presentation, in order to directly share their work and lived experience with audiences in the US.

Thrilled to receive a @bigfieldfund Research/Development Grant as I begin a new project titled Siren. It draws on my own gendered experience growing up in the Midwest, and singing in choirs most of my life. It also responds to the recent legislation of the region (and the nation) that threatens the safety of my body and those of so many others. Excited to begin and to be in conversation as it evolves.

“With aims to develop an experimental score, Thalassa Raasch will research the etymology of “siren,” visit choirs and singing communities in and around Iowa City, and host conversations with womxn about the intersectional legacy of femme voices in expressions of resistance and joy. Along with ten diverse womxn singers, one to represent each decade of life, Raasch will initiate collaborations to create both an ephemeral and responsive live performance and an immersive multi-channel audio-video installation. Siren will investigate what it means to sound an emergency, using the power of voice as an instrument of change.“ @warholfoundation @p_s_won
