It was terrific to be part of @experience__ready, @rea_group’s annual conference — it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase @bigissueaustralia vendors and magazine, and to spotlight Homes for Homes and our mission to help end homelessness. 🏡

New editorial illustrations for @bigissueaustralia and their #IWD issue on the gender pain gap. The story on endometriosis treatment felt particularly real to me as I have had my fair share of experiences on this topic. Many thanks to @gozercreative for the commission and as always my wonderful agent @jackywinter.

More than 116,000 Australians are homeless. Not only are they at greater risk of exposure to COVID, they also face significant barriers to accessing the vaccine and other health supports.

Abdullah smokes a cigarette outside Cohealth's temporary vaccination clinic in Melbourne, which supports vulnerable individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, in the fight against COVID-19.
-

Abdullah is 58 and has had numerous bouts of sleeping rough. Just as the pandemic hit, he found himself homeless again. “I ended up going to a crisis centre in St Kilda, a place where you can also get needles and stuff, and they asked me if I needed emergency housing,” he says. “One thing led to another, and I was put up in a hotel.”

For 13 months, Abdullah had a secure roof over his head and says he enjoyed some of the simple things in life, like fresh towels. He was recently placed in long-term interim housing via the Victorian state government’s From Homeless to a Home initiative. It’s where he’ll stay until he can secure permanent public housing.

It’s time for Abdullah to receive his second dose. He secures his face mask. “If everybody did the right thing and lined up and got their jabs, pretty soon there’d be no COVID-19 to worry about in Australia. I’m doing the right thing for myself and my community.”

"A friend of mine won’t do it yet. He’s holding off to see what will happen to
other people. I told him he’s going to eventually have to get the vaccine so you might as well get it done now. There’s no use changing your mind when you’re dead.”

In the wide world of sports the word "participation" can carry a snide subtext, but for the Falcons, it's something to be celebrated..."I think we've lost that joy of participation. Clubs are recruiting based on the skill level of players, so what happens to all those players that might not be the best on the field, but are surely worthy of getting out and having a kick?"

Thanks to the @bigissueaustralia and writer Tansy Gardam for the latest write up on Equal the Contest.

Putting winning above participation is a sure fire way to miss opportunities to build culture and community in a club. How do players improve if they don't get opportunities to play? How many players who weren't good enough to make the cut could have gone on to become the heart and soul of a club? So many conversations being had after our screenings, asking clubs to consider what's most important and how we can change tradition to be more inclusive of everyone. Sport is for everyone.

A huge thank you to our community partners for joining us at Ready24 last week. We’ve heard from many who attended Ready, and we agree - their involvement was so impactful, as is their ongoing efforts towards ending homelessness in Australia.

Together, we raised $400,000 to support these organisations in continuing this important work.

Thank you to @bigissueaustralia and @gozercreative for asking me to create some type for this month's cover!

This month, The Big Issue is celebrating the magazine's wonderful vendors (like cover star Dan K from Adelaide). Inside there's a series of Letters to Our Younger Selves, Lionel from Melbourne’s pitch diary, and MBK’s family recipe for potato and cheese Ukrainian Vareniki.

It's on sale now, so make sure you grab a copy! The front cover of The Big Issue magazine. There's a large photo of The Big Issue seller Dan K, and the major headline that reads, 'Stories from the Streets: Vendors on what matters most'.

Can you believe that this time, four years ago, our lives were drastically altered? We shifted from vibrant social interactions to enduring lockdowns and isolation, hoping for a shorter duration than the two years it ultimately became. Today, the impact of Covid lingers: masks are still worn, booster shots continue, and political turbulence remains.

I was based in Melbourne, a city that arguably endured one of the toughest lockdowns. However I was lucky enough to be "let out" to cover this story with Anastasia Safioleas for The Big Issue.

More than 116,000 Australians are homeless. Not only are they at greater risk of exposure to COVID, they also face significant barriers to accessing the vaccine and other health supports.

During the Corona Virus Lockdowns, Cohealth provided temporary vaccination clinics in Melbourne, providing vaccinations to vulnerable individuals, including those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

---

Ben Quinn is part of a specialist team that supports homeless health. Quinn is all too familiar with the significant health barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness. “They experience discrimination, they don’t have ID or a Medicare card, they’re not linked into a GP clinic and don’t have access to reliable information,” he says. “It means many members of the homeless community don’t feel comfortable or safe accessing a vaccination hub or GP clinics. For those reasons, it’s really important that we break down those barriers. One way of doing that is to bring the vaccines to where people are living or spending time. It’s also about providing information in a way that connects with the homeless community from a trusted source.”
