PANGOLIN TRADERS CAUGHT!⁠

Our friends at @biglifeafrica in Kenya recently shared the incredible story of a trafficking bust they made, putting two poachers behind bars with bail set at $10,000 USD. These two men purchased a live pangolin to sell at an incredibly inflated price, but they didn't see Big Life's intelligence officers watching their every move. Alongside their partners at Kenya Wildlife Service, Big Life's intelligence team were able to catch them in the act and put them behind bars. Best news of all, they found the pangolin alive and it was quickly released back to the wild. Only a couple of days later, Big Life caught another man attempting to sell pangolin scales. He has pleaded guilty and will remain in prison for seven years. ⁠

Pangolins are the most trafficked animal on the planet. Although it is illegal to trade pangolins, the market for pangolin scales is increasing. The scale of this issue is massive, but by working together we can tackle it head on and ensure a future for this iconic species. According to our amazing partners at Big Life, here are some actions you can take today to make a difference:⁠
1️⃣lobby your local government to restrict trade in wild species⁠
2️⃣do not consume exotic animal parts⁠
3️⃣avoid the exotic pet trade⁠
4️⃣donate to Big Life to stop traffickers in their tracks and help dismantle the illegal wildlife trade⁠

The week last year was a great success and with the partnership of AWF we saw over 3,500 students in 17 schools, spoken to them about the plight of elephants and rhinos.

Tim, the Great Elephant Bull
Tim, one of Africa’s largest and most magnificent elephant bulls, hailing from the Amboseli ecosystem in Kenya, has been sculpted in pure sterling silver by the world-renowned silversmith from Zimbabwe, @patrickmavros.
With the right tusk around 9 feet long and weighing in at 135 pounds and the left tusk around 8 feet and 125 pounds, Tim is one of the last great tuskers who has not been killed by poachers thanks to the dedicated efforts of anti poaching.
Magnificent Tim is a symbol of hope and success, and in the year 2019 the world celebrates his 50th birthday.
This spectacular silver sculpture stands 7.5cm high and depicts the famous elephant’s characteristic tusks in exquisite detail. Signed and dated on the underside by the celebrated artist.

All proceeds from the sale of this item will be donated to Saving the Wild’s partner, @biglifeafrica, the devoted protectors of Tim.

A few weeks ago, we had our very first Lion Week to celebrate the life of the legendary George Adamson and to raise awareness of the plight about lions in Africa. We were honoured to have Daniel Ole Sambu from Big Life Foundation and Richard Turere with us in Hong Kong to take part on our educational programme. .

Daniel has been to Hong Kong a several times with us for our annual Elephant Week but this time for lion conservation. He spoke about how Maasai people are changing their 500 years tradition in killing lions to support conservation through sports- The Maasai Olympics, where Daniel will back for with 10 Maasai Warriors in November 2019. Stay tuned for more details! .

Richard is a young Maasai inventor and first time to Hong Kong. At the tender age of 12 he invented ‘Lion Lights’, an elegant way to protect his family’s livestock from lions attack. He shared with the local school children, the solar-powered solution designed to safely scare the lions away.

They both spoke to over 500 students, took interviews and broadcasted live with RTHK. We also had a small fundraising dinner on 20th August, in memory of George Adamson’s 30th death anniversary and a special screening of the George’s film “Born Free.”
