To Dr Rizzo @j_2_the_rizzo … thank you for quite literally saving my life. Thank you for fighting for me. Thank you for being my advocate and champion before I even knew who you were. Thank you for your ferocity and kindness. Thank you for saving my remaining leg when everyone else was trying to cut it off and take it away from me.

To Dr. D… thank you for listening to me. Thank you for supporting Stephanie and I mentally through the hardest time in our entire lives. Thank you for being one of the most empathetic human beings I have ever met. Thank you for your gentle nudges, to point me in the right direction so that I could keep my head right for myself and my family.

To Josh and Sarah and Marcos @marcoslovesjiujitsu … thank you for being the first to help me realize I was still capable. You were the ones who helped me understand that my life wasn’t over… it’s just different. Thank you for getting me up and out of that God forsaken hospital bed no matter how tired I was. You helped me get back up and into the fight.

To PeyPey @bigp110 and Ally @acwhite1 … I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t crying writing this right now. I don’t even know where to start. The words “thank you” don’t even do justice for how grateful I am to both of you. The other teams saved my life and you two gave me my life back. You helped me get back on the mats. You helped me get my strength back. You two are the reason, the literal backbone of my recovery that got me to not only stand, but to smile again. Thank you for putting up with my wildly inappropriate antics. Thank you for believing in me and caring not just FOR me but ABOUT me as a person. You two are my brother and my sister. I am forever in your debt for the gift you have given me.

You are all heroes to me. From the bottom of my heart… Thank You.

P.S. As always, thank you to my beyond incredible wife for sticking by my side for better or worse. She will have plenty more of her own posts. 🙃

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

I set a goal to walk on my own by Dec 1st. Today, we accomplished that goal.

I am beyond grateful to EVERYONE who has been there for us. The calls, the texts, the prayers, the visits. Our care teams all the way from BAMC ICU to Outpatient at Pam to the burn unit and most especially to these two right here. @bigp110 and @acwhite1 you two have been a massive difference in my life (much more sappy post to follow later this week on these two).

We’ve got a long way to go on this journey but today is a huge milestone.

YOU set your own standard… but you’re not doing it alone.

Lastly, my wife. My hero. My biggest fan and the love of my life. I love you so much. Thank you for staying by my side and showing the rest of the world what true love really looks like. I am the most blessed man in the world because of YOU. I love you.

TODAY…. Starts a new beginning of our lives! Today, Jay is relearning how to balance with the use of his new left leg 🦿… these are things we all take for granted but today, JAY IS GRATEFUL!!

Going hard on upper body today in PT with Pey Pey 😜

I bet y’all thought I’d never share another recap…. well this one is a great one 💪🏼👊🏼

▫️Had progression testing yesterday and in just ONE MONTH Jay has improved on▫️▫️▫️

⭐️Knee flexion has gone from 55 degrees to 112 degrees (105 degrees under his own power)

⭐️Went from 5 consecutive pushups to 53 consecutive pushups

⭐️20 reps of 155lbs (his current body weight) on the bench press with no arch or stabilization

⭐️Total gym one legged squats from 10 partial reps at level 12 (lowest setting) to 21 reps at level 26 (highest setting)

🫤Foot drop has not improved due to lack of motor function below his right calf but has had no regression while the nerve endings slowly repair (may take up to a year or more)

💥Has improved on every metric of strength by approximately 1000%💥

Even though we like to have fun in PT.. all kidding aside, it’s brutal at times but the saying goes “no pain, no gain” 💯% applies even to the toughest people! Jay has a personal goal… to walk fully even if it requires walking with a cane but he is determined to walk by December 2nd (our original end date of PT with Burn and clinic). We all know, if anyone will do this, it’ll be Jay 💪🏼. Some of you may know this but if not, he does not have feeling from his calf down and no motor skills whatsoever in his foot. So driving off in the golf cart in Nashville was a huge deal! What we LOVE about our PT team at the Burn Center at BAMC is that they tailor the exercises to their patients lifestyle. They aren’t just trying to get him strong, they are actually hitting every aspect of what is important in Jay’s everyday routine. I told Ally we were going to Dallas this wkd and a small concern with staying with one of our friends and there are steps. Today, we practiced on walking up and down with the walker on a step!! #everydaygettingstronger #hittingnewgoals #progress
