So where were you on 9/11, and how did it impact your life?

I had just graduated college and was staying at my parents’ house in Pennsylvania. My mom was already at work. She was an ER director at one of the closest hospitals to where Flight 93 went down, and they were waiting to see whether any survivors would arrive.

I was watching TV with my dad when the plane hit the second tower. He’s a Vietnam vet (pararescue) and his first instinct was to immediately drive to NYC to help recover people from the rubble. But he was also on call in his role as a psychologist and as one trained to help with trauma after disasters.

We didn’t go that day, but I took a train to the city two weeks later.

You could still smell and taste the smoke and debris in the air. National Guard troops stood on street corners, and flyers for people who were still missing covered the city. Everything felt quiet, scared and sad.

Then I went to a drum circle in Central Park.

It started somber but as the drums got faster everyone began crying and dancing at once. That’s when I really fell in love with New York.

I fell in love with the resilience of people who could grieve and still gather, create, dance and keep going. I knew then that this was HOME. I knew this was where I wanted to raise my children, surrounded by that diversity, creativity and resilience.

And here I am, 25 years later, so lucky to be doing exactly that. ❤️

Every year, I do this remembrance ride with @bridgerollersnyc, alongside so many born-and-raised New Yorkers I’m grateful to know. 🙏❤️

And we’re putting back miles and doing all right for some old heads. 😂🚲grateful to be living. Remembering those who are not
