Guru’s @guru.jazzmatazz story hits different when you realize he had a business administration degree from Morehouse College before hip-hop became his life. 🎓

Keith Elam graduated in 1983, then briefly attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He eventually walked away from that academic path to pursue rap — a decision that helped lead him toward Gang Starr’s legacy 🔥

He had the degree, but his real education became life, the culture, and the microphone 🎤 R.I.P 🕊️

Real knowledge. Real hip-hop. Guru was built different.

Big Shug – “Crush” (1996)

“Crush” is a single by Big Shug, released in 1996 as a standalone 12” before his full-length debut. Produced by DJ Premier, the track sits firmly in the mid-’90s East Coast boom-bap tradition and stands as one of the early records that helped establish Shug beyond his appearances within the Gang Starr Foundation.

At the time, Shug was carving out his identity as an underground MC, and “Crush” is a strong example of DJ Premier’s loyal commitment to the crew — delivering the stripped-down drums, hard-edged loops, and head-nod energy that defined the sound of New York hip-hop in the 1990s. The track survives today as a grimy, hard-hitting snapshot of that era, passed around through vinyl, tape dubs, and early internet uploads rather than mainstream commercial rotation.

Because “Crush” predates Shug’s first proper studio album, Who’s Hard? (2005), the single captures a transitional period in underground hip-hop — a time when MCs depended on 12” singles, independent distribution, DJs, and word of mouth to build an audience. It was a world before streaming, before algorithmic playlists, and before today’s constant hype cycles, when credibility was earned through raw records, live appearances, and the strength of the music itself.
