I love to support independent designers, and recently I was lucky enough to be introduced to not one, but two!

@rokcibej makes the most incredible clothes. Rok came to my Milan show with the most gorgeous pink mirrored dress and I promised him I would take it somewhere special. I was blown away by the frock and his generosity!

@bijouxdechagall makes beautiful rings - if you’re looking to propose any time soon then have a look at her designs 💍

Last weekend I sang for the incredible @childrenwithcanceruk Gala which was really special, and thanks to the dress and ring I felt suitably twinkly to celebrate a hugely successful evening of fundraising and dancing 💃

Congratulations to @thefrothycoffeeman and the whole charity for raising so much for such a brilliant reason 🩷

Have you ever read something that has totally made you reassess a long held belief?
I have. Pretty recently.
Here’s the belief:
I feel embarrassed about taking selfies. I hate how afterwards I question and am critical of my appearance. I’ve said things like, ‘They are shallow, they are vain, they are all that is wrong with the world.’
And to some extent I still feel that. I worry that my kids see and appraise their appearance so regularly and what that will mean for their sense of self and for their mental health. I struggled to post this photo today.
And yet, I really do like looking at pictures of other people! When I like another creative’s work I am interested to put a face to that talent and to find out more about them.
I also love looking at self-portraits in art too (like the ones above). It is so interesting to see how an artist views themselves and expresses how they want to be seen.
Hollie McNish @holliepoetry wrote a wonderful book called ‘Slug’. In it she reflects beautifully on how the selfie has been reduced to an act of self-indulgent vanity when it could also be viewed as a powerful tool to express our own identity. There has been a long history of self portraiture and the power that comes along with that privilege. A portrait says that you matter and that power was only available to the people who had enough money and status to either pay someone to do it for them or to have the talent to portray themselves. Now that power is available to almost everyone. You no longer need an artist to express your identity. That power is yours. And isn’t that a rather wonderful thing? Isn’t that how it should be?

Anyway, it all really made me think.

I don’t think I’ll ever be truly comfortable taking pictures (or painting) myself but I have posted this selfie today because I do see the benefit of it. Making art is about connection and connection is about having the confidence to show yourself to the world.
And that means (sometimes) having to put your best face forward.

What do you think?
