Hawaiian bonefish, known locally as ‘ō’io, grow to be among the largest in the world. Averaging 4 to 10 pounds, they frequently top double-digits, with the state’s largest ever caught weighing in at an incredible 18 pounds, 2 ounces—holding a world record for 25 years!

POV: You're 17 years old and tell your mom...

"Hey, I'm bringing some friends over for dinner."

She expects your classmates...

🚪 Instead, a bunch of 30-year-old Jiu-Jitsu guys walk through the front door. 😂

Bilal says his mom was probably wondering:

"What is going on here?!"

That's the magic of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

On the mats, age doesn't matter.

Your training partners become your friends, mentors, brothers, and sometimes... unexpected dinner guests.

This episode is packed with stories like this—from moving to Hawaii for "just one year," to becoming the owner of Gracie Barra Kapolei, to why community means more than medals.

Thinking about trying jiu-jitsu but not sure where to start?

Bilal Ahmed and the team at Gracie Barra Kapolei are making that first step easier by offering a FREE Women’s Jiu-Jitsu class every Sunday at 9:00 AM, taught by female black belt Professor Heather. It’s a welcoming space to learn, build confidence, meet an amazing community, and discover what jiu-jitsu is all about.

Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, stress relief, or simply trying something new, everyone starts as a beginner—and you’ll never have to do it alone.

4th of July fishing with friends! Amazing music by @turningrootsofficial 🔥Estuaries were historically vital to Native Hawaiians who engineered brilliant coastal fishponds (loko i‘a). Using makāhā (sluice gates), they would trap juvenile fish, like striped mullet (‘ama’ama) and milkfish (awa), to grow safely in the brackish waters where they could be easily harvested.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to train, roll, laugh, and celebrate our 1-Year Anniversary Open Mat with us. Seeing our mats filled with teammates, friends, families, and visitors reminds us what Gracie Barra Waipahu is all about—a community that grows stronger together. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

Here’s to another year of learning, growing, and sharing the mats with one another. We can’t wait to see what the future holds! 🥋🫡
