Family reunions are a Labor Day weekend given, so why not for a tribe that came together, in no small part, due to the Vision of a 29 year old, before we personally knew him or one another?

Brad Dorfan started Vision in 1976—first with skate decks; then, a decade later, with some of the most covetable street wear, events and pro roster.

The octogenarian was on hand at last night’s opening (slide 3 w/ Paul Schmitt) @HVW8gallery in LA, along with dozens of the era’s legendary skaters; influential creatives who got their start at this incubator of sorts; and many more who never worked there—including yours truly, who was eyeball deep in this eclectic, maverick clan during the late 1980s.

Hundreds funneled throughout two gallery rooms, squeezing by familiar faces on the walls and IRL. They hailed from San Francisco and Florida. Thankfully, we could also party in the parking lot behind the gallery.

Vision’s impact on the culture-at-large included the INXS album cover with the Psycho Stick graphic (10). The cartoon man with the swirly specs was in-house graphic artist Gregory Bevington (17, w/ @chuck_hults). As for the tattoo in the next pic? Belongs to some young whipper snapper. It’s that iconic.

One phenom whose bearing was everywhere was that of John @Grigley. Stuck in his adopted NYC shooting an Apple+ series that has nothing to do with skateboarding, some of us tortured him thru the event texting clips and pics (4 is one ie). All in mad love for you Old Ghost.
(Another MIA, @cindyjimenez, other half of co-organizer @martyjimenez, aka Jinx (19). We missed you lady!)

About 450 archival pieces are featured in this too-brief 3-day show, painstakingly curated by Marty @don_brown @ideafarm dano_zhang. Bravo.
One rare gem: a catalog page with a wee photo of me, wielding a spray paint can, clad in streetwear by my longtime pal and then-head designer at the brand @Mantrap_by_hml (she of the leopard hat).

You’ll have to see the next post for that…

SHOW ENDS TMRO: Sunday, ya. Lame. Then it’s off in a much grander iteration plus a documentary, to Shanghai and Tokyo.

I started my own company in Tokyo 20 years ago because of my favorite brand Freshjive. I’m so glad to have met the founder Rick & Bill again after a long time. Although we’ve all aged, it was a great meeting to see that we’re still doing what we love.
