Tequila Sunrise

Il cielo era magenta, le nuvole avevano i bordi accesi come brace. Sotto, il mare ha copiato tutto, onda per onda, fino a far sparire la linea dell’orizzonte.

Black Marlin off Watamu.

Conventional tags from the African Billfish Foundation, running since 1990, have turned up off Yemen after 159 days and about 1,880 miles, and off India after a year. Most other recaptures come back to the Kenyan coast.

Satellite tags tell it cleaner. From 2015 to 2019, captains working with the Marine Megafauna Foundation put pop-up tags on 49 black marlin off Kenya, fish from about 40 to 227 kg. They averaged more than 1,800 km. The longest track was 11,944 km in 167 days, at 40–50 km a day.

One 80 kg fish tagged at Watamu in the 2013 IGFA Great Marlin Race reached the Gulf of Aden in 46 days: 1,108 nautical miles, straight line. Another 75 kg fish went south and nearly reached the Zambezi.

Others north into Somali waters and Oman. East toward the Seychelles. South into the Mozambique Channel. One stock.

One fish released today may be off Oman next month.

Tag them. Let them go.

There’s something about being offshore that resets you.

No noise. No drama. Just good people, open water, and memories that stick with you.

Sometimes the fish aren’t even the best part.

Offshore heals. 🤙🏻
