Everything We Can Possibly Hold Gallery opening hours: Monday through Saturday 12pm - 5pm April 18 - May 2, 2025 Friends Gallery, 3401 Harrisburg Biva, STE 1, Houston, TX 77003 Gesture, etymologically gerere-to carry or to bear. Carrying something across a river, a field, a distance. To touch, to bear the weight on hands. To lean into and be leaned upon. Carrying one's body across lands and oceans. Translation is to carry something across languages. Gifts are carried and delivered to friends. Is it the same thing upon arrival? Carrying can be a collective effort-"holding out one's hands to others, is the beginning of everything," as performance theorist Diana Taylor reminds us. Gestures distribute time and commitment. How do we carry memories, histories, and skills? How do we bear the uncanny loosening of one's mother tongue, the overdetermined narrative structured by the nation? What if carrying is no longer possible? To carry each other as in Franny Choi's poem The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On: "By the time the apocalypse began, the world had already ended... It ended, and we woke up and ordered Greek coffees, drew the hot liquid through our teeth, as everywhere, the apocalypse rumbled, the apocalypse remembered, our dear, beloved apocalypse-it drifted slowly from the trees all around us, so loud we stopped hearing it." In response to the beginnings and endings in the midst of unfolding catastrophes, we invite artists to invent gestures. "Everything We Can Possibly Hold" looks at carrying as a metaphor and a method for art-making and world-making. The artworks engage with migrating bodies, shifting shorelines, witnesses of history-and most importantly-the poetics of friendship. In absence of possibilities, we carry through.
