Sometimes it takes exploring the world to appreciate what you have right in front of you.

I really enjoyed getting to know @janamebillie while creating this film for the We Saved You a Seat campaign.

Born and raised in Saskatoon, Jana spent 26 years running her family's flower shop on Broadway after stepping in to help her mom. What wasn't originally part of her plan became some of the best years of her life.
Now retired, she's embracing travel, pushing herself outside her comfort zone and experiencing different cultures around the world.

But what I really loved about her story was how all that exploring has only deepened her appreciation for home.
There's something about travelling that changes the way you see things. You experience different ways of living, meet new people and come home with a different perspective on the place you've always known.

And sometimes you realize just how much that place means to you.

As Jana puts it, "Saskatoon is where my family is. It's where I belong. It is home."

Another story from our We Saved You a Seat series with @discoversaskatoon.

🦃🍂 Build Your Thanksgiving on Broadway
Thanksgiving is Monday, October 12, and whether you’re cooking everything from scratch or happily outsourcing a few parts of the meal, you can build a pretty great Thanksgiving table right here on Broadway.

🦃 The Main Event
Steep Hill Food Co-op Ltd. and The Bulk Cheese Warehouse both have turkey options. Steep Hill is also a great stop for local produce, squash, herbs, baking supplies and pantry staples, while Bulk Cheese can help with cheeses, specialty meats, appetizers and a pre-dinner grazing board.

🥕 The Sides & Pantry
Saskatoon Herbs n' Health carries organic and specialty groceries, nuts, cranberries, pecans, spices and options for different dietary needs. Healthy Living Bistro Boutique also has cook-at-home and takeout options, plus olive oils and balsamics.

🥖 Bread, Buns, & Baking
Christie's Bakery has a Thanksgiving lineup of farmhouse buns, pies, tarts, pastries and cookies. Nutana Bakery has breads, buns and fruit pies, while Happy Hi Bakery is another stop for something freshly baked and a little less traditional.

🍰 Save Room For More Dessert!
Calories has you covered for beautiful desserts. Beppi's Gelato offers take-home gelato and sorbetto, Italian cookies, pizzelle, chocolates and other confections, because pumpkin pie is great, but pumpkin pie and gelato sounds better!

☕After Dinner
Pick up coffee or loose-leaf tea from McQuarrie's Tea and Coffee Merchants for the post-dinner pot.

💐 Set The Table
Fiori-Studio or Bill's House of Flowers can help with fresh flowers; Handmade House and Clay Studio 3 have Saskatchewan-made pottery and tableware, and The Better Good has local and sustainable little extras for the table, pantry or host.

However Thanksgiving looks at your house, even one local stop helps support the businesses that make Broadway, Broadway.

❤️ What are you thankful for this year? Tell us in the comments.

Please check directly with businesses for availability, ordering deadlines and holiday hours.

We hear from our customers that one question comes up again and again:

“Why are flowers priced the way they are?”

Because in this industry, we don’t just play with flowers…

Florists are creative professionals, business owners, problem solvers and experts in their craft.

When you purchase flowers from a professional florist, you’re not simply paying for the stems.

You’re paying for years spent learning colour, composition, mechanics and design. For the creative eye that can take a bucket of flowers and turn it into something extraordinary.

And behind all that beauty? There’s a whole lot of work.
Buckets are carried. Flowers are processed and conditioned. Coolers and vases are cleaned. Orders are designed, wrapped, loaded and delivered.

And flowers don’t wait. They’re perishable. They require constant care and what doesn’t sell can’t simply sit on a shelf until next month.

Then there’s running a business: ordering, pricing, accounting, marketing, sales, scheduling, customer service, payroll, rent, utilities, deliveries and employees who depend on that business for their livelihoods.

And perhaps the biggest responsibility of all?
Florists are trusted with some of the most important moments in people’s lives.

Weddings. Birthdays. Anniversaries. New babies. Celebrations. And goodbyes.

Sometimes there is only one chance to get it right.

So no, florists don’t “just play with flowers.”

They’re artists, designers, buyers, builders, marketers, salespeople, delivery drivers and business owners.

And everything we’ve shown in this Reel? We’re only scratching the surface.

There is so much that goes into bringing flowers from a bucket of stems to something truly meaningful.
So here’s to the floral professionals behind every stem.

We see how much goes into what you do, and we think that deserves a little more love. ❤️

It’s not playing with flowers.

It’s the florist who stayed late remaking a bouquet. The designer worrying if a wedding will be perfect. The dependence on a perishables product. The uncertainty of freight and weather delays. The team processing hundreds of stems before sunrise. The customer expectations, last-minute changes, and countless challenges customers never see.

We see the effort. We see the sacrifices. We see the trial and tribulations.

And we wish more people knew just how much care goes into creating something that may only be held for a moment, but remembered for a lifetime.

What are things you wish more people knew about our industry? ❤️🌸

Throwing it back to one of our favourite design by @billsflowers 💛

Using our Ceramic Pot with Leaf Relief, she created a stunning arrangement of creamy garden roses and cascading golden amaranthus. The soft blooms and flowing texture create a design that feels lush, romantic, and effortlessly elegant.
