Sunday Special

Carlos grew up in a Christian home in Accra, where Sundays, in his words, were “all we looked forward to during the week”. In 2022 he recreated those Sundays in the series “Sunday Special”: getting dressed for church, the prayers, the sermon, the choir, the organ, and then home, or lunch with family and friends.

The texts in today’s slides come from the two essays in the Collectors Journal we published for his first Paris Photo, in 2025: one by Bill Shapiro, former editor-in-chief of LIFE, and one by Nathalie Herschdorfer, director of Photo Elysée, the photography museum in Lausanne. Herschdorfer wrote in French; the translations are ours.

The last photograph, “Many Reasons to Live Again”, was used this year for the official poster of the Rencontres d’Arles. It was also shown in the exhibition “Ghana! Dreaming Independence 1957–1976”, together with photographers who worked in Ghana in those years, such as James Barnor and Felicia Abban.

I am very excited to tell you that I will be a part of a great group show at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Mass (just outside of Boston) called Common Time/ American Musicality.

The show will include 9 other photographers that all have documented different genres of music. I want to thank Crista Dix @griffinmuseum for taking a chance with me and introducing me to the public for the first time. I have been working on my archive for the past 8 years to get to this point. Also, I want to thank Bill Shapiro @billshapiro and @bluephoto.co and Elizabeth Avedon @elizabethavedon for their unwavering support.

The show opens October 30th-December 6 and the opening reception is Sat November 7th. I hope you can make it!

A new book featuring my street work from New York — including my cover image — is out in Europe today.

It’s a great feeling to see more than a decade of work come to a fruition in yet another book @thenewyorkchronicles ⚡️

This time I had the opportunity to be not only one of the photographers, but also the lead editor of „Now Is Now New York”, an anthology bringing together the work of 11 contemporary street photographers living and working in New York today.

The idea was to present different perspectives on the city through the eyes of a younger generation of photographers who are actively documenting it today, each with their own distinctive style and approach.

As editor, I was responsible for researching and bringing ten photographers to the project, as well as selecting and sequencing the images. It was a fascinating experience that allowed me to look at the photography business — and the process of making a book — from a completely different perspective.

Thank you @teneuespublishing @gestalten for this wonderful opportunity. Big thanks to all of the photographers for being a part of this book. And thank you to my friend @billshapiro for interviewing me for the introductory Q&A.

Very proud to see the book out in the world this month. The US release is set for October.

Bill Shapiro @billshapiro has been lucky and knows it. The archives he was allowed into, the photographers he got to meet, the history he lived alongside. What he takes from that is not gratitude but obligation, and a modest one: you do not have to do it every day, it does not have to be a grand gesture. If you have been lucky, help somebody else get lucky.

Late eighties, a commercial magazine, a photographer who shot everything on a fisheye.

For two years it worked, because everyone recognised him by it. Then it stopped being a style and became a gimmick, and Bill Shapiro @billshapiro says you do not see his work anywhere today. The thing that made him recognisable is the thing that ended him.
