I was there for so much of it—enough to know this: @jessicasimpson ‘s long game (& sometimes reclusive) resilience allowed her to evade what many in pop media tried to reduce her to. And it’s actually overlooked.

Out of Waco singing in church with a voice that could shake rafters, an innocent smile every camera loved, a pin-up cheerleader’s appeal and trust in a small (& evolving) team around her. A&R legend @tlabarbe saw it first (as she has w so many superstars) and so did the leaders of the “machinery” who sometimes unfairly go from favorite Godparents to easy scapegoats in high stakes 2000s era pop. Even now, the inevitable risk of stardom’s pursuit: punchline or punched?

She cut LOTS of records. Like all songwriters I was hunting for hits when “With You” went to #1. I didn’t think it would make the album. @MTV turned her & Nick (a great hang/dude) into a phenomenon. RealityTV erased boundaries and fame avalanched on top of them. But while Pop culture obsessed over tuna and body image, Jessica quietly built a profitable empire rivaling her own label—a billion-dollar (with a “B”) brand that spoke directly to women who felt unseen by the culture or cost of the day. Dumb blonde? At a specious glance, maybe. Or maybe dumb like a fox. 🩊

It’s a big life and it didn’t go easy on you, Jess. Divorce. Addiction. Motherhood. Public judgment with no mercy clause. And still—you stand back up, lean on the few trusted shoulders, tell your truth (Open Book=bestseller!), carry your three kids, and after 15 years not performing found your way back to singing on your terms. No labels. No chart chasing or playlist obsessing.Just being a work in progress out loud, humbled by heartbreak and over being judged.

This month, I watched her perform to a sold-out crowd in Connecticut. Mom Tina front row, proud as hell. Teresa side stage steering the ship. And when Jess shouted me out—after 20 years—it landed the way gratitude should: deeply.

Jessica Simpson could have been a cautionary tale.
But maybe she’s just an unexpected story in survival—more Fonda than Mansfield.
Still a Southern girl with her Levi’s on and an open heart.
Still standing.
Credit where credit is due.🙏

I first met @kellyrowland briefly outside Sony Studios in January 2001; I believe she was 19. Months later we were at A&M Studios on LaBrea writing and recording for her first solo album
all this while @destinyschild was on full, touring on full, features on full
career and life was on full. @genamann7 and I were expecting our first when we finally got in the studio and I remember Kelly telling me how much she loves kids and she could not wait to meet our baby. She called me big bro. Over the years, Kelly is promises made, promises kept. Kelly was there for our first, second, third and fourth kid
for milestones and cobblestones. Seeing her perform tonight—her first time back touring America in years—had me so proud of her. Yes she sang the hits. Yes she crushed the high notes. Yes the dancing was fire. Yes she does not age. But as fast as she got off stage, she skipped past the flashbulbs and kudos and was back in mom-mode, full glam and arms gathering her sons up in her arms. Her career on stage, television, in films, singing, DC, solo, speaking, advocating, all of it has never eclipsed her passion for being a parent. Balance is not easy for any of us in this world, but tonight her balance was effortless. And that sparkly, curious, 19 year old smile remains full and bright, just as it was decades ago. Loved seeing you, Tim and the boys, Kel. More milestones to come! đŸ«¶ i love you
