FROM WHERE I STAND

I had sooo much fun on Saturday! It was a dream and joy to participate in the From Where I Stand @macla_sanjose exhibition tour and community photo walk hosted by the incomparable @_miguelozuna of @sj.shooters.

And what an honor to listen in on the curator-led tour of Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures exhibition at @sanjosemuseumofart! Check out the exhibits!!

Thank you to @alyssarhaye, @juanomar.r and @_miguelozuna for hosting THE BEST DAY!

I can wait to develop my roll of film and see how it turned out ❤️🫶🏽

Frida Kahlo said, “I never paint my dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality.”

@j.duh @jb.was.here and @corey.alexander_ created this mural in 2020 and their message still holds true.

We need CHANGE.

On Saturday, June 22, MACLA (Alyssarhaye Graciano) and SJ Shooters (Miguel Ozuna et al) will collaborate for a photo walk, free and open to the public. Attendees will meet at MACLA for a Curator-led tour of the exhibition. Exhibiting artists are encouraged to attend to share about their exhibiting work. The group will then photo/walk through Downtown San Jose with their own cameras (or borrowed from SJ Shooters). The walk ends at the San Jose Museum of Art for a curator-led (Juan Omar Rodriguez, SJMA) tour of Christina Fernandez: Multiple Exposures.

From Where I Stand—From Where I Stand features photographers Stephanie Barajas, William Camargo, Alex Knowbody, Adriana Martin, Xelestiál Moreno-Luz, and Miguel Ozuna. The exhibition shares each artist’s perspective on the current state of our communities, our grief, our struggles, our joys, and how we see ourselves within it. Works are loosely tied to topics up for debate in the coming election season. Visitors of the exhibition will be able to take their own photos in the gallery and have them displayed within the exhibition, encouraging dialogue and reflection. Join us to witness the intersections of art and politics, and see how images can influence and reflect the public conscience during this pivotal time. June 7, 2024 - August 11, 2024

“Integrity is fundamental to your identity.”

In 2012, I got a call from my dad that @p.flo_sf needed some folx who were down to help bring his show “Placas” to @macla_sanjose starring Ric Salina’s of Culture Clash. and some other amazing Actors. I was in my 2nd year of attempted college (😂) and I said “I’m down! Because who knows when I will be able to say I did a play with Ric Salina’s again!”

I remember walking into the museum floor of @macla_sanjose headed to the black box and I was amazed at the beautiful art that was on the wall. I wondered if I would ever know an artist that displayed there. Shoot maybe even I could one day have some work on display there (at the time I was still painting/drawing).

12 years later.

I am 3 sleeps away from being able to walk in there and see MY art on those walls. To be in a room with some POWERFUL and PHENOMENAL photographers. To stand where some giants have stood and will continue to stand.

And I get to show some of my art that has never seen the light of day. By the graces of @alyssarhaye who saw my vision, and could see the story that it told.

Countless hours were spent inside of the walls of MACSA, at three different sites, and ultimately the end of MACSA was where my beginning of my MACSA started. Walking in for a summer camp during my first summer here in San José, was a much better feeling then walking through floors that cracked with every step in the broken glass, artistically enhanced walls, and smells of abandoned fires that kept someone warm.

It gets much deeper. And we can talk about it on Friday, June 7th from 5-10pm at the opening of “From Where I Stand”.

Come and enjoy the @subzerofestival and spend sometime with the art by @billythecamera @stephroars @nonbinarymami @adrianamartinphotography @alexknowbody and myself.

Talk about full circle.

Blessed and humbled for these opportunities. Thank you @macla_sanjose

Thank you MACSA.

The priority deadline ends tomorrow, be sure to sign up!!

This year’s institute theme focuses on “From my stories to our stories: decolonial imaginations. C. Wright Mills defined the sociological imagination as, “to grasp what is going on in the world and to understand what is happening in themselves as minute points of the intersection of biography and history within society.” Linda T. Smith defines decolonial as, “long-term process involving the cultural, linguistic and psychological divesting of colonial parameters.” Queer Chicana historian Emma Perez defines the decolonial imaginary requires, “changing the representations of these conditions, specifically the representations of conquest and colonialism.”

Students will develop projects connecting their family genealogies with larger U.S. History. The SJSI Instructional team will include librarian Barbara Miller (Zúñiga Research Collection), Ashley Yniguez (Lead ZRC GA), and Colleen Greene (Digital Scholarship Librarian and Genealogist)— who will guide students through our databases for doing social justice-informed history and genealogy basics to create family histories. Artist and Art Department Lecturer William Camargo Claudio (or Billy the Camera on Instagram) will teach students how to develop public shareable “communal archives” through mediums such as zine-making or creating a social media archive (e.g. Instagram).

Dr. Gradilla will lead the fellows in discussing the importance of decolonial thinking, racial/decolonial futurisms, utopias, abolitionist practices, and freedom dreaming. We will learn to dream of future utopias where we will all be free.
