Bimbo Agitprop (@bimboagitprop)- Raquelle Jac, published by Fantagraphics (@fantagraphics)

Raquelle Jac’s (@raquellejac) diary-style, confessional comics about growing up through the y2k era in West Texas evoke uncomfortable memories of summers spent staying with my family of cheerleaders and athletes in the panhandle. Revealing, horny, and a touch hedonistic, Jac’s work is endlessly relatable. Consciously or not, Jac pays homage to the radical underground material of cartoonists like Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Julie Doucet while remaining truly representative of the socio-economic scene and identity politics that shaped her Southern upbringing. This book is her debut as the cartoonist voice of Gen Z.

Mary Pain - Lola Lorente (@lola_lorente_e), published by D+Q (@drawnandquarterly)

When I met Lola at SPX, I told her I thought Mary Pain was a beautiful book. “Not also sad?” she asked me. “Yes” I replied, it is sad, but also tremendously funny. Mary is headstrong and clearly suffers with traumatic experiences in her past, but her stubbornness invites laughter. Lorente’s otherworldly, fantastical cartooning opens up a proverbial door into this dream-like journey of moving through grief and learning when and how to open your heart in the process.

✨contradictions✨ A clip from the recent Instagram LIVE I did. Folks helped me narrow down & decide which page to send to @fantagraphicsbookstore for the @shortrunseattle Marathon Art Show.

During the Live spoke a little bit about my new faith and recognized some contradictions within my artistic practice. But idk y'all, I suppose I 'chose' to be Muslim because I chose to listen to where my faith was calling me, but in another sense, I feel like I didn't choose to be Muslim. I feel like Islam found me, and I had to listen, or else, be dishonest. There's a part of me that wants to say "wow that sounds so cheesy," but I honestly don't think it does. It just sounds true to me. So bear with me as I figure out how my art will be affected by this ❤️.

Thank you @thewilddetectives Book Club! I had such a lovely time at y'all's discussion of Bimbo Agitprop. I feel so inspired. I've been examining where I want to take my art + comics, now that I'm post-B.A. and I think y'all helped me with that.

Swipe to see my notes from the discussion and a photo dump from the night.

If you have notes from reading @bimboagitprop I would love to see them! I'm really fascinated by people's analysis of the work.

I'm so grateful for the positive reception Bimbo Agitprop has gotten so far. People really seem to understand what I was going for when creating B.A. It's hard to conceive of how lucky I am. But I am trying to wrap my mind around it. I'm eternally grateful.
