Let’s be clear this week. As we celebrate recovery and overcoming eating disorders, that this does not mean that when you are in strong recovery you are 100% healed and “fixed” (ugh I hate that word).

Here’s where I’m going with this:

I personally don’t believe in full recovery (if you do that’s a ok fine!). I just don’t. I would believe in full recovery if people could exist outside of diet culture and this world.

But when people say “I’ve full recovered from an eating disorder” I often hear “I live in one of the most privileged bodies.” (Once again, no shame at all)

But here’s the thing, as a Black woman in recovery when I am affected by racism one thing I IMMEDIATELY question is my ability to live in my body.

Am I too fat? Am I too Black? Am I healthy enough?

Recovery teaches us to eat all foods and love our bodies. How do we do that when racism and fatphobia have their boot on our neck?

How do we overcome our fear of food completely when doctors harp on that as the cure to the high death rates of Black women in hospitals. Wouldn’t you question that hamburger too?

I’m not saying if you say you’re fully recovered you should be ashamed or that you’re wrong in any way. I’m asking, “what is allowing you to stay safe and free in this fucked up world we live in?” Are you suffering from racism and fatphobia? Is your actual life on the line at the doctor?

I’ll talk more directly about recovery later this week but for now I want to leave you all with these thoughts.

Drop a 💖 in the comments if you read this far.
