Tonight, I was delighted to attend the preview of @theinvisibleisland ‘s solo show, ‘There Is Nothing Old Under The Sun’, at @standpointgallery

As the winner of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award 2023/24, Steph Huang continues to explore mass production and commerce, the transcultural and historical dimensions of the food industry, and the impact of these markets on our natural environment. Employing various manual techniques, Huang transforms everyday spaces and objects into minimalist sculptures and poetically charged installations that resonate quietly.

The exhibition will tour to @eseacontemporary later this September. We have some tremendously exciting new partnerships, co-commissions, and a funded publication associated with Steph’s solo show at esea yet to be announced!

I have known Steph since I returned to the UK to direct @eseacontemporary two years ago. I have always been deeply impressed by her dedication, drive, and talent, as well as her nuanced and precise understanding of her medium, primarily sculpture, while constantly exploring new possibilities with depth and imagination.

I can’t wait to formally announce our upcoming collaborations with Steph this summer and autumn, including a residency, a solo show, and a new publication!

Special thanks to everyone for a wonderful evening. From left to right:

- Michael Taylor, Director of @standpointgallery
@binitawalia , our brilliant PR
- Myself, just showing up
- Steph Huang, the rising star who will have a solo show at Art Now @tate Britain this summer just before coming to @eseacontemporary
- Lindsay Taylor, Curator at the University of Salford Collection @salforduni
- @emmajbenyon , Assistant Director at @standpointgallery , who has been marvelous in supporting the artist’s work and development

🎉 We had a party celebrating our 20th year at the weekend 🎉 and this moment was pure joy (thanks @binitawalia for capturing it)

Sharing gratitude for the brilliant humans who we have had the honour to work with over the last 20 years. Thanks for all the wonderful video messages, which we shared on the night, and we will share them online soon 🙏

There are so many photos from the party coming soon and an epic video with highlights from 20 years of shows made by @al.orange too 👍

We are also very excited to announce a new website which we hope will be ready to launch by the end of 2024, just as we turn 21! Exciting times! Watch this space.

🩷 Big Love to all the TF family 🩷

“For Goner, it was the first time I was going to really look at my Caribbean heritage in the form of the movement material and sounds. I was also like, is there a Caribbean tradition of horror? I found it interesting to pair Goner, island culture and singularity. I thought, let me work with what I think my cultural heritage is.”

Huge thanks to @marikiscrycrycry who spoke to @francesca_matthys about their work Goner, dance horror, culture and collaboration. Read on our website! 📸 @danvisuals 💥

“Not only is it powerful for a non-binary, masc-presenting lesbian like me to be in big institutions, but it’s also powerful for the collaborators who aren’t usually or systemically seen in those influential dance spaces.”

This summer, we shared The Lost Feather 55 times with hundreds of children and their families, in libraries, hospitals, schools, festivals and theatres all over the country 🪶🦜

All of it was brilliant, but what were some of the cast’s favourite moments of the tour? Watch to find out.

Now we’ve told you our best bits, we’d love to hear yours! 🤩

Throwback Friday!
Images from my exhibition Modern Women, a two person show with Binita Walia. Modern Women was an artist-led, artist-curated exhibition at Airspace Gallery in Stoke on Trent in February 2015, featuring the work of Binita Walia and Emilia Telese, exploring some of the challenges and issues faced by women from different cultural backgrounds in Asia and the Mediterranean, such as stereotypes, rigid gender roles, inequality, honour killings / feminicide as well as the implications of cultural migration and multiculturalism in society. The exhibition entrance featured poster performances referencing Asian abd Italian movies of the 1950s.

Funded by Arts Council England.

📢 Announcing our next exhibition 'Elsewhere'

Showing at Bethlem Gallery, 24 May – 9 September 2023
Open 9.30am – 5pm, Wednesday-Saturday

What do we gain when we think about elsewhere – and what do we learn about here?

Work from seven contemporary artists will occupy the gallery and landscape at Bethlem Royal Hospital throughout the summer. ‘Elsewhere’ is guest curated by artist @bethhopkinsart.

The exhibition interrogates the idea of public space – how we can use creativity to move beyond closed and restricted spaces to spaces of radical openness. Exhibiting works are playful, highly personal and political. The artists interrogate the notion of power and control over public space – from a queer utopia built in collaboration with a childhood friend to a pastoral folk vision of a hoped-for future, where land is not owned by a privileged few but is freely accessible to everyone.

Exhibiting artists from Bethlem Gallery include @Corinnesdiary, Eddie, @MaxBranReeves, and @SueMorgan209. @professerobabalascar will also be doing a digital residency. They are joined by artists from Turf Projects, Croydon;
@daisyflyoung, @hoagy_yama and Pear Nuallak.

A programme of events including workshops, a residency with @turfprojects at Wandle Park and across Croydon, a symposium and a Morris dancing parade will explore the themes of the exhibition, and the link between nature and mental health. Taking place within the gallery and in the grounds of Bethlem Hospital, events will run throughout the show.
