Birdability is a nonprofit working to make birding and the outdoors accessible and inclusive for everyone, especially those with disabilities!

I'm honored to again be invited to participate in @birdability Week 2026
The theme: "Bird where you are"

Being a birder and having disabilities...differences...'atypical' needs can be so layered and complex. It's why seeing the individual is so important

Speaking for myself -I am many identities and grateful to be welcomed in many of the spaces that reflect and honor who I am
It's for this reason that I share with you about my summer. Well it's actually been over the course of 1.5 years

My condition -CSF leak/Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension was unexpected and new
During my convalescence in CO -all I could do was lie in bed and watch far too much news and 90 Day Fiancé
I couldn't read, walk too well, or write much
I was on meds and required bedrest

And it was a time for deep reflection. I was reminded that patience and beauty will reveal themselves
Most of my 30 days there, I saw no birds. So I would look at your posts and videos of YOUR birds and continue to heal
That's how it can work

I told myself that I'll write a blog about this as this space is limited

Thank you to my family and friends who understood my need for independence and much rest (the Taurus in me :)
Your encouragement and love was the balm
There were and still are many things I could not do and places and events I could not attend
Folks like me have to keep going when we can and this may seem confusing for those looking in

Chronic conditions have a way of sparking ingenuity amidst times of sadness, grief, depression and exhaustion

The birds remind us to still find the joy and awe that is near

Deep gratitude to Dr. Callen & his awesome team @uchealth @spinalcsfleakusa &
@marriottbonvoy Aurora, CO staff

I'll be offering a virtual birding Monday morning to help kick off Birdability Week & on Wednesday is @ldpharr Inclusive Nature panel discussion.
There are events online and in communities throughout No. America so please check them out and support in ways you can

PEACE + BIRDS Y'ALL 💜

To celebrate Birdability Week 2026, we're gonna slow it down with a bird sit for everybody and every body in collaboration with Charleston Bird Club. Never done a bird sit before? It's an accessible birdwatching event to see as many birds as we can from one fixed location. Fort Pemberton Park is Charleston's newest city park located on James Island. It offers accessible parking and restrooms, newly paved walkways, and water fountains- perfect for an inclusive birding event!
Bring a blanket and/or camp chair, a friend, and binoculars if you have them. No registration is required. Come for the whole time or just pop by! As always, reach out with any concerns or questions.

Next week is @birdability Week! This year’s theme is Bird Where You Are and what better way to celebrate than letting the birds come to us? We’re visiting the parrot roost at Pasadena City Hall on Wednesday, October 21. We’re meeting at 6pm by the Robinson Memorial Statues. All are welcome. Please be aware that the birds are very noisy! Feel free to bring your favorite noise cancelling headphones or earplugs. Foam earplugs will be available.

For additional details and to RSVP, visit the Eventbrite page via the link in our bio.

[Image description: A group of 8 or so parrots are perched at the top of leafless branches in front of a dusky blue-grey sky. Most of the birds are red-crowned Amazon parrots, with one bird’s head quizzically looking towards the camera. One yellow-headed Amazon sits on the far right looking left. The text reads: Feminist Bird Club LA for Birdability Week, Accessible Birding at the Pasadena Parrot Roost, Pasadena City Hall, Wednesday, October 21 6:00 pm, A stationary event! We’ll wait at sunset for the birds to come to us. Please note, the birds are very noisy. We will have earplugs to share.” Photo by @needsmorebirds]

On Sunday I had a fantastic morning out with the Glasgow women's birding group to an accessible location 10 minutes drive away. Great range of birds - flock of linnets, stonechat, parakeet, lots of pink footed geese, buzzard, kestrels sparrowhawk and more!

Every shade of gorgeous 🌈

Photos taken on Isla Grande, Colon, Panama - December 28th, 2025.

Image IDs are pinned in the comments.

Audio description: A shimmery, electronic song with a disconnected feel. The background is composed of guitar, bass, drums and synthesisers. A voice sings “I wanna stay with you for a long time, I wanna be your stone, love, I wanna see it lay in your eyes, When I’m leaving with your love. I will always think about you, That’s why I’m calling you back, ‘Cause I gotta run soon.”

T Gilbert Pearson Audubon is hosting an accessible birding outing on Wednesday, October 21 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. along part of the Downtown Greenway.

We will stroll along the greenway looking for birds and any other fun nature find we see. Since it is also Native Plants Week, we will also enjoy seeing all the new native plants that have been planted along this section of the greenway.

The outing is free and open to anybody and any body whether you are new to birding, an experienced birder, or just want to take a stroll with us. The parking lot and path are both paved. After the walk you are welcome to join us at Westerwood Tavern for a beverage if you would like.

We will park and meet in the parking lot behind Westerwood Tavern 505 Guilford Avenue.

Any questions or concerns, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you there.
