Another wonderful year at @truefalsefilmfest . This year we saw 10 documentaries. In order from most favorite to least. 1. “First They Came for My College” - Students/faculty at New College try to hold onto their university they love as Ron DeSantis strips it of all of its integrity & intellect. 2. “American Doctors” - Heroic journalism captures 3 brave American doctor’s trials and tribulations in Gaza as they confront mass casualties as Israel bombs schools and hospitals. Deeply sobering, maddening, and heart wrenching. 3. “Aanikoobijigan” - Illuminates the racism and oppression of native American people through the mass collection of their ancestral bones stored in our museums across the U.S. Keeping their ancestors locked is a source of deep existential trauma and disrespect. 4.”The Oldest Person in the World” - Follows Sam Green over a decade as he interviews the oldest people in the world, learning how to confront his own battle with cancer, the death of his brother, and his very young child’s understanding of time. 5. “School for Defectors” - Celebrates the journey of teenagers of North Korean defectors in South Korea as they process the separation from their families, the prejudice held against them for being from North Korea, and familial shame of leaving loved ones behind. This film follows them through their life in a school for just defectors. 6.”The Eyes of Ghana”- Produced by Barack and Michelle Obama follows Ghanaian documentarian Chris Hesse as he recounts his journey as the personal cameraman of first Ghanaian president and revolutionary African leader Kwame Nkrumah. 7. “Landscape of Memories” - Grapples with the very complex question of how we choose to remember tragedy, and specifically how Germany’s remembrance culture of the holocaust impacts Jewish people and Palestinians living in Germany, especially as right wing political parties suppress Palestinian activism under the guise of antisemitism. Deeply personal as the producer also confronts the deep grief held by her father with ALS from inherited familial trauma of the holocaust.
