How do birds show affection? Birds take their bonds seriously. Over 90% of the bird population is monogamous with many mating for life. Birds are believed to have feelings such as joy, grief and stress. Many birds form strong social bonds with their mates and flock members. One of the strongest signs of affection is towards their offspring. They actively feed them, protect them from threats, keep them warm in the nest and sometimes will even vocalize soothing sounds. I am posting two photos taken during the same sequence. Ospreys are monogamous and form strong bonds. They are sole migrators and the male will return to the same nest used the previous season and get it ready for his mates arrival two weeks later. I presume father Osprey is bringing fish to his chicks and mother Osprey is watching. These two images were taken in July and the chicks are growing fast. Father Osprey hunts and brings up to ten fish per day to the nest. By to the end of August, mother Osprey has lost about half her weight and leaves to start her migration. Father Osprey stays around and teaches his young to hunt on their own. When he is satisfied, he leaves, with the chicks the last to leave. I believe we need to learn from birds. Their devotion and responsibility are behaviors we should emulate. A bird I have never seen is the “Masked Lapwing”. They are native to the northern parts of Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. They are non migrators and normally live on the edges of wetlands. Masked Lapwings are shy and spend most of their day on the ground searching for food. They have a wide range of calls, such as warning calls, loud defending calls, courtship calls and calls for their young. Masked Lapwings are carnivores and mainly eat insects, large and earthworms. They are monogamous and mate for life. Both parents incubate and care for the young. These two images were difficult to capture. I was at the Bird House, at the Bronx Zo, and besides having to negotiate with a glass enclosure, these two birds were very shy and I needed to have lots of patience to wait for them to get closer. The exhibit also had lots of vegetation and I had to navigate my camera around the vegetation. Africa is always full of surprises and wonder to find those surprises, you need to focus on the entire location and not stay focused on the larger creatures. I spotted a tiny strange looking bird, high up in the tree, and took some quick pictures. Marc, our great local guide, identified this bird as a “D’Arnaud’s Barbet”. This species was named in honor of the French explorer and engineer, Joseph Pons d’Arnaud. They are only found in Eastern Africa. These birds build their nests on the ground and create a tunnel leading to the nesting chamber. What’s so special about this picture? Every May, I look forward seeing the “Ruddy Turnstones” pass through Shinnecock Bay on their way to the Arctic tundra to breed. They spend about two to three weeks fattening up and resting and then one day, are gone. Ruddy’s are long distant migrants and travel more than 6500 miles between breeding and non breeding grounds. They are found on both coasts of North America as well as South America, Eurasia, Africa and Australia. Ruddy’s got their name form their ability to flip over stones and other objects to get prey hiding underneath. Their flight speeds average between 27 and 47 miles per hour and they have been known to perform non stop flights of over 4500 miles. I love how on the left side of this image, it seems like a small group of Ruddy’s are talking. Maybe these are the leaders and they are discussing when to leave. I will always wonder on who makes the decision to leave an area and what that decision is based on. I tend to believe it has something to do with the length of the day and the amount of sunlight. Ruddy’s tend to return to Shinnecock from late August to mid September. I remember standing on an observation platform, on one end of a watering hole at our Camp at Tsavo East, and noticed this “Gray Heron” standing still. I was too far away to see any reflection, but guessed that some sort of reflections were created due to the time of day and being close to the water. Many photographers try to avoid reflections by using polarizing filters, but I search for reflections and embrace them. I believe reflections are a way of increasing my creativity and adds depth and dimension to common images. Adding reflections tells a different story than just the subject alone would. I also prefer reflections created by an unstable surface rather than a calm surface that creates mirror images. By using a body of water that is unstable, you can create texture and ripples. This image was taken at a fast shutter speed. I did not want to flatten out any ripples in the water and wanted to avoid any blur. It was quiet at my little piece of the South Fork, so I decided to take a walk at a small nature refuge that I frequently visit. The trail is wooden and is elevated above a salt marsh. It was early and as I stopped and looked across the marsh, the sun appeared to be reflecting into the shallows. It seemed to me that the conditions were ripe for “Specular Reflections” and when a Great White entered the scene, my creativity perked. The small circles created in these five photos are probably caused by particles of dust or dirt floating in the air and reflected on the surface of the lens I was using. I have read that these circles have been named “Bokeh Circles”. When the opportunity presents itself, I embrace taking these type of images. Some of you might think that these images are not “Perfect”, but I have always believed that photography is not about taking perfect pictures and that most of us are too caught up in the rat race of taking perfect pictures. If we were only to pursue the perfect picture, that would take away from our creativity and style. There are times when I look to be imperfect and these images reflect that. My photography is about me preserving that moment in time the way I see it. The scenes that interest me most are when I see subjects that are common in my part of the world and try to create unique ways of presenting their beauty. Photography is about the journey and experience and the picture is a way of preserving that experience. Think of the act of taking the picture as the final product and afterthought.
