What will it take to protect children from the growing influence of ultra-processed foods?

At the International Food Addiction Children’s Conference (IFACC) 2026, world-leading experts, clinicians, researchers, and young advocates come together to tackle one of the biggest public health challenges facing children today.

This year’s distinguished speakers include:

Dr Rowena Merritt – A social and behaviour change specialist in UNICEF's nutrition team and lead for Fix My Food - the global youth advocacy programme active in 20+ countries.

Dr Alex Richardson – One of the world’s leading researchers on how nutrition shapes children’s behaviour, learning and mental health.

Mona Obaid – Certified Food Addiction counsellor whose work is transforming support for children and families affected by food addiction across the Middle East & North Africa region.

Last week, BBC Radio Merseyside visited one of our Northwest ‘Beacon’ schools, St George’s in Wallasey, to talk about the School Food Project with catering lead, Jennifer Price, curriculum lead, Olivia Fisher, and some pupils at the school during lunchtime.

The school has just begun its journey to become a ‘Beacon’ of school food in the region - undertaking the project’s programmes in food education, catering excellence, growing & enterprise, student voice and food culture & leadership.

The programme takes a whole-school approach to food, involving everyone from governors to students to improve all areas of school food in the kitchen, classroom, garden, and wider community. The chosen Beacon schools will become leaders within their regions and inspire and share learnings with neighbouring schools as the project develops.

We’re delighted to be working with fantastic schools like St George’s and can’t wait to follow them on their Beacon journey!

𝟳𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 in households on Universal Credit are missing out on vital support provided by NHS Healthy Start due to the strict eligibility criteria.

So we're leading a coalition of 100+ organisations calling for the government to fix the scheme to ensure pre-school children don't go without help in what are some of the most critical years for their development.

🤔 Difficult to take seriously these so-called concerns from industry leaders about new government regulation designed to make it easier for people to eat healthily – while the business of Big Food carries on as usual.

🧃 An update to the UK’s 20-year-old nutrient profiling model would see more sugary foods banned from multibuy deals and daytime advertisements. The pushback from Big Food is straight from the industry playbook (borrowed from Big Tobacco): that new regulation will push up prices, is too hard to enforce, and they’ve already done the work through reformulation.

✉️ In a letter to the PM, industry leaders hint at government hypocrisy: “at a moment when growth is the government’s stated priority, and when every part of the economy needs the confidence to invest for the long term, this proposal adds fresh uncertainty and cost to an industry that itself underpins that growth.”

🚫 But with new FFCC analysis from @proftimjackson showing unhealthy food is costing us nearly £300bn a year, does Big Food really contribute to growth and our national prosperity? Or are they lining the pockets of their shareholders at immense cost to our health, planet and economy?

We have officially wrapped up an incredible fortnight welcoming a brilliant line-up of guest chefs into our school! They’ve been cooking hands-on with every single class, completely transforming our usual routine into a buzzing culinary adventure using produce the children have grown.

The biggest shout-out goes to our youngest learners: Year R cooked in their very second week of school! That has to be a school history first.

📝 New blog: Purpose, place and the missing plate

🌹 FFCC Chief Exec @suepr reflects on Labour Party Conference 2026 – and why a fairer, greener, healthier and more resilient food economy is critical to the government’s central ambition of growth.

⚖️ Over the course of the Conference, a theme emerged: we cannot rely on corporations to set their own guardrails. Regulating corporate power, devolving power to places and communities, and ensuring our everyday essentials work for the public interest and not the private interest can help build a more prosperous, resilient country.

🍏 It’s encouraging to see a government ready to challenge the status quo. But food is still not getting the attention it deserves. As Sue says, “The fact that our global and local food economies are both damaging the planet and its ecosystems, and the people in it, and increasingly precarious and vulnerable to global shocks, should put it front and centre of the whole cabinet.”

🥕✨ British Food Fortnight: Carrots, Creativity & a MasterChef

Today Luke Emmess stepped in for Year 4 - and the spotlight was firmly on the carrots the children have grown from seed in our school garden. They quizzed Chef about his job and were curious to understand menu changes.

Luke took their harvest and turned it into carrot three ways: bright, crunchy, silky, surprising - each one designed to tickle their tastebuds and show just how exciting homegrown food can be.

A perfect celebration of British Food Fortnight: local, seasonal, and grown with small hands but big pride!

🚨 We’ve spotted some traitors… 👀

Not the kind hiding in a castle. These are hiding in the supermarket aisle. 🕵️

Some children’s food products look healthy on the outside, but what’s really going on underneath? Think sugary cereals dressed up with health claims, snacks disguised as vegetables or products covered in cartoon characters designed to appeal to children.

For the Most Misleading Children’s Food Product Yucky, we’re looking for the products that are not quite what they seem.
