POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I’ve been trying to write words to describe this past weekend and all I can come up with is OVERFLOWING ❣️💥 Michelle’s show is overflowing with love and care and thoughtful detail. The opening reception was overflowing with people with nothing but smiles and good energy. My heart is overflowing with love and a feeling of support from so many visitors, old friends and new. There’s even a painting in the show titled “Overflowing Gently” 🫶 If you missed the party, come see the show while it’s hanging through September 28. It is absolutely beautiful and I am so proud to have it on our walls. Thank you to everyone who came out and huge thank you to everyone who purchased pieces. I am so proud to say there are just two gorgeous paintings available now 🥹🥲 Come visit us any day of the week, except Tuesday for now. Big thanks to the amazing @onawacharbonneau_photo for these perfect photos of the event ❣️❣️

Mengidab - Palauan word for spider or spider web 🕷️

A symbol of acknowledgement for the Spider God. The Spider God, a human spider, in Palauan creation stories fell in love and married a young girl. They were expecting their first child but at this time, it was not likely the mother would make it. The Spider God delivered the baby safely and since then the people of Palau were able to practice natural childbirth.

*The story has many different iterations*

Since then, the people of Palau continue to recreate this story through storyboard creation and the symbol of a geometric spider is commonly found on the walls of the Bai.

The spider depicted is a Giant Golden Orb Weaver spider, a species that is found in Palau. I wanted to include both the spider and its web as the Palauan word holds a double meaning depending on the context it is used. While related in style to Malk, I wanted to refer to the geometric structure of the spider symbol with the orange angular lines in each corner. These lines are reflective of the spider’s angular legs, sometimes depicted in a 90 degree or closer to a 45 degree angle.

Huge thank you to @thousand_cranes_1kc for hosting @weaving.currents and giving Malk and Mengidab a space shared with so many talented artists in our diaspora. @1kc_tica @bittyklayfish @abbynotwe thank you for creating and organizing this opportunity for us to come together. Thank you to @otainatongo for making me feel like I was there with these photos. I wish I could have been there in person but I can feel the love all the way back in LB.

Mengidab is the second installment to Our Symbols series. More is to come 🧡
