POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I was just told that the Norma Jean album “Redeemer” turned 20 years old today. That record is one of those things that feels like a lifetime ago, and at the same time somehow feels kind of recent. It holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. I listened to it today for the first time in many years.
Couple things that came to my mind while listening/reflecting:
- “the end of all things will be televised” is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever recorded. I remember @scottie_henry working for so long writing the final breakdown section, and it taking me a while to wrap my head around it

- I remember how surreal it felt to be working with @ross_robinson as the producer. This was a literal childhood dream that somehow became a reality. every expectation of what it would be like to work with Ross was met and exceeded. His influence on my drumming on this record still affects my playing 20 years later. (Like the absurd and wonderful idea of playing closed hi hats on a breakdown in “small spark vs a great forest”). Ross masterfully captured the life and emotion of the songs like no other NJ record I had made.

- Staying up all night working on lyrics and concepts with Scottie and Cory

- Seeing a huge painting in Ross’s house that would end up being used as the album cover

- @noah___greene hopping a freight train from Seattle to come hang out while we were recording in Weed, California.

- Finding a frozen dead body while sledding on Mt Shasta

- Ross being on crutches from a motorcycle accident, and hitting my cymbals with his crutches

- Going to Sweden to film two music videos with Popcore Films

- listening to mixes of the record remotely and sending edit notes while on my honeymoon.

- I remember writing guitar parts for “a temperamental widower” and being stoked because I thought they sounded like ETID. And writing guitar parts for “cemetery like a stage” being excited, cause I thought it felt like a “real” song.

- I remember being very proud of “no passenger: no parasite”, feeling like it was a fun and cool direction to be exploring, that it pushed against the boundaries of aggressive music
