5,000 miles for a beer competition! What brings a beer judge all the way from Belgium to Southern California? For Brent Bruynseels (@brentbruynseels ), it was a chance to pursue his BJCP certification, explore the American craft beer scene, and connect with fellow beer enthusiasts at SoCal Cerveceros’ Bright Side of Summer competition. With a background in chemistry, bio-engineering, and professional brewing, Brent brought a wealth of knowledge to the judging table. But what stood out most wasn’t just the beer, it was the welcoming community of homebrewers, professional brewers, and beer lovers who make our local brewing scene special. From creative homebrews to brewery visits and new friendships, Brent’s trip was a reminder of what makes this hobby so rewarding: beer has a way of bringing people together.  Want to read the full story? The complete article is featured in the Fall 2026 issue of La Chela Libre, the SoCal Cerveceros (@socalcerveceros )members-only newsletter. Not a member yet? Join our community and get access to the newsletter, club events, and our Discord community! Cheers, Brent! We hope to see you back in SoCal soon! THURSDAY NIGHT AT BRACKET BREWING, BJCP OFF-FLAVOURS TRAINING Tonight was all about getting a little deeper into the science of beer, with a BJCP off-flavours training session at Bracket Brewing. The evening was a fascinating dive into identifying common beer off-flavours, understanding where they come from, and learning how brewing, fermentation and storage can all influence what eventually ends up in the glass. I’ll admit, I didn’t exactly set the room on fire with my results, but that’s probably the point. Getting it wrong, understanding why, and learning from those mistakes is all part of becoming better at tasting and understanding beer. A huge thanks to everyone involved in organising the session. Nights like this are exactly why I love the craft beer world. There’s always something new to learn, and I’m more than happy to keep tasting, learning and occasionally getting it spectacularly wrong along the way. Cheers to craft beers! #craftbeer #craftbeerlife #craftbeerstagram #lager #beer

🍺🏆 PITTSBURGH SHOWED UP AT BEER & SWEAT! 🏆🍺 Pittsburgh homebrewers representing TRASH, @trubrewers & WAZE — including a strong showing from the TRASH Pirates 🏴‍☠️ — made the trip to Cincinnati for the 38th Annual Beer & Sweat hosted by @bloatarian_brewing and brought home some serious hardware! If you’ve never been to Beer & Sweat, this isn’t your typical homebrew competition. It’s keg only! 🍺 Beers are first put through a BJCP-judged competition, then the doors open and the event turns into a huge beer tasting festival featuring all those kegs. And Pittsburgh had one heck of a showing: 🏆 Mike Beattie — Ordinary Bitter — 🥇 1st Place + 2nd BEST OF SHOW! 🥇 Richard Romanko — This Has to Be Better Than Fred’s — Saison 🥈 Aaron Sams — Catastrophe — Oatmeal Stout 🥈 Chris Radi — Limoncello Spritz Sour — Wild Specialty Beer 🥉 Mike Beattie — Blonde Ale #1 🥉 Fred Mullner — Andy Melchers Molests Goats — Mango Passionfruit Cider 🥉 Mike Petrick & Katrina — Dark Mild That’s 7 medals + a 2nd Best of Show coming back to Pittsburgh! 🏅🔥 Huge congratulations to all of the winners and everyone who made the trip to brew, pour, judge, taste and represent the Pittsburgh homebrew community. 🏴‍☠️ Now we need an even bigger Pittsburgh crew next year! If you’ve never made the trip to Beer & Sweat, start thinking about what keg you’re bringing in 2027. 🍻 #PittsburghHomebrew #BeerAndSweat #TRASHHomebrewers #TRUB
