How can ecology reclaim space along the Seine?

Living off the Edge proposes a flexible framework for increasing biodiversity along Paris’s riverfront while working with existing port infrastructure.

Developed in Adaptive Strategies (AR0110), the project explores interventions at three scales. Small, removable additions introduce habitat and planting elements within existing structures. Medium-scale interventions retain the upper quay walls while transforming the lower quay and relocating selected port and leisure functions onto floating modules. At the large scale, a deliberately speculative scenario imagines ecological transition zones extending into the surrounding city and opens discussion of controlled flooding.

For Bercy, four proposed phases outline a transformation over approximately 50 years, allowing ecological, industrial and public uses to evolve together. The aim is a more porous relationship between river and city, with greater space for a diverse river ecosystem.

“A port is a support system.”

Productive Hybridity: Integrating Food Production into Port Infrastructures asks how Port Bercy, Paris, could support local food production alongside existing logistics and public life.

Developed in Adaptive Strategies (AR0110), the project reads the Seine as a changing interface between land, water, infrastructure and the city. Drawing on Bercy’s wine-related past, it proposes hydroponic modules, raised planting beds and cultivation within existing wine cellars to support a shorter local food supply chain.

The proposed toolkit combines reused containers and salvaged port components with bricks made from dredged material. Elevated growing spaces are intended to respond to flooding, while new stairs would connect the quay with the city above. The proposed system also explores waste heat and CO₂ as inputs for cultivation, and a produce, organic waste and compost loop with boat restaurants along the Seine.

Through scenarios that shift between logistics and food production, the project asks how a working waterfront could become more layered, adaptable and attentive to its existing capacity.

[Learningscape]

Learning is a lived spatial practice. Without students, there is no learning space—just as without gardeners, there is no garden.

In Versailles, nature is never simply nature. The formal gardens of the palace, the productive Potager du Roi, and the picturesque Parc Balbi embody different relationships between humans and nature. Their forms are neither innocent nor accidental; they express ideas of order, cultivation, and the appearance of naturalness.

The project proposes a new student centre for the École Nationale Supérieure de Paysage, approaching architecture through the virtues of gardening: to observe, to care, and to cultivate. Rather than imposing a predetermined order, it seeks to establish conditions within a living field of relations, allowing space to evolve through occupation and use.

And I—I merely mark out the garden bed. In doing so, I become the architect.

[The Working Stage – A Ballet of Production]

The project reimagines Le Potager du Roi as a stage for the unseen labour and operational infrastructure that sustains our cultivated landscape. Developed from the spatial logic of a proscenium stage, processes of production are seen, experienced, and reflected upon by the visitor as they enter the garden rather than hidden backstage.

The building is divided into 2 contrasting volumes, a performative steel structure covering onstage and a discrete backstage built from stabilised earth bricks: Together, they form The Working Stage of Production where making, maintaining, and learning are continuously performed in public. Teasers, tormentors, and semi-transparent scrims frame different forms of work, allowing spaces to open, close, and shift as required. The fly space becomes the only visible element above the surrounding garden walls, exposing the operational structure normally concealed.

The design responds to historic datums within the landscape, creating a hierarchy of routes that choreograph relationships between gardeners, students, and visitors. Conceived as a performance across its full life cycle, the building makes its construction visible and allows partial disassembly over time. As production practices evolve, the stage may be removed, leaving behind only the imprint of the production that was once there.

PROJECT TITLE
Lamp
(Redevelopment of the former Cinema Corso into a new contemporary art incubator)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The redevelopment of the former Cinema Corso into a new contemporary art incubator is grounded in the concept of permeability: the building departs from its original nature as an hermetic container to become a relational device, intertwining creative production with the public space of the city. The intervention preserves the historical memory of the main facade on Corso Fogazzaro, concentrating transformation on the western elevation along Stradella del Garofolino. The design responds to the hollowed-out original auditorium by inserting a double-height opalescent volume: a suspended urban lantern that diffuses soft, zenithal light into the large hall below. An integrated circular technical grid ensures complete spatial and exhibition flexibility. The massing of the existing structure retains a heavy, mineral presence. On the western cylindrical wall, a horizontal cut creates an urban window protected by sliding metal mesh gates—a dynamic threshold allowing artistic activities to glance outward and temporarily spill into the street. Internally, a vertical circulation core organizes the space between the double-height foyer and the main hall with its high clearance. A continuous visual axis pierces through the entire building, connecting the street, the exhibition hall, and the urban square to the west. Through a few precise syntactical gestures, the former cinema redefines itself as a place of experimentation and identity for the community: an open, essential, and inclusive scenario where artistic production coincides with urban life.

Where does your drinking water actually come from? 💧

Most of us never see it. The journey from rain to tap happens out of sight, behind walls and in faraway treatment plants. For @dutchdesignweek , we wanted to change that.

Rain Vessel brings water filtration out into the open, so you can see every step for yourself.

We'll be in Eindhoven from 17 to 25 October. Come find us, ask questions, and see it in person!

Swipe through for a first look →

A big thank you to @bk.tudelft @studdelft , #SensiBlue and @ksbcompany / @duijvelaar_pompen for helping us bring this to life.

Letters of the Bouregreg
Water as Ground, Woman as Ground

Developed within Urban Archipelago 2025/26 (AR2HA020), Group 1’s project takes a hydrological feminist approach to design in the Bouregreg Valley, between Rabat and Salé, Morocco.

Drawing on field trip observations and course readings, with further interviews proposed, the project explores women’s everyday habits and water-related practices in Rabat. It asks how these practices participate in and shape water cycles, and how water, in turn, influences social relationships.

Following Jamie Linton’s notion that “water goes and bonds” (2010), rituals such as visiting the hammam, tending gardens and preparing mint tea are understood as practices that connect people, places and hydrological processes. The project seeks to make these often-overlooked relationships visible and strengthen women’s experiences along the Bouregreg River.

These ideas inform a proposal for wetland regeneration, flowing pathways, sound sculptures, a gathering pavilion and a teahouse. Women’s participation in construction, maintenance and rebuilding allows these spaces to evolve with the river and the community, framing architecture as an ongoing collective process.

The film brings this possible future into view through watercolour illustrations and imagined voices of women inhabiting the transformed landscape, accompanied by sounds of water recorded in Morocco.

Care to… slow down, create, gather.

Developed within Urban Archipelago 2025/26 (AR2HA020), Group 6’s project explores how architecture can support everyday practices of care in the Bouregreg Valley, between Rabat and Salé, Morocco.

The project questions the socially constructed association of care with women and the privileging of rational thought over feeling. It calls for architecture and public space that make room for care and invite people of all genders to participate.

The proposal traces a pathway through a series of interventions: clay tile workshops connecting children and families to the valley, an entrance incorporating water filtration, adaptable wooden structures, planting that supports biodiversity, and a teahouse for gathering and shared rituals.

Clay connects the landscape, local craftsmanship and the act of making. Shaping, building, tending and preparing tea become ways of caring for the valley and its human and more-than-human inhabitants. Together, these practices frame architecture as a process requiring time, attention and continued participation.

AWARDED ______ What a great honour! On Wednesday 7 October, at the @architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, we received the DAM award for the publication ‘Kho Liang Ie: Designer + Interior Architect + Networker’, published by @japsambooks / @stedelijkmuseum. The festive award ceremony for the 10 best (interior) architecture books of the year took place during the Frankfurter @buchmesse in the presence of many publishers, designers and authors.

Haico Beukers and Marga Scholma (Beukers Scholma), editor Ingeborg de Roode (Stedelijk Museum) and @eleonoor_jap_sam accepted the prize, during the ceremony lead by curator and director of the DAM Peter Cachola Schmal. Co-editor Eng Bo Kho was unfortunately unable to attend.

A jury made up of external experts and representatives of DAM met to select the year’s ten best architectural books from 248 entries. They based their decision on criteria such as design, content, quality of material and finishing, innovation, and topicality.

The jury statement read by Moritz Bernoully: [This book] brings a designer back into view whose work is still remarkably present, even though his name has largely disappeared from public awareness. Based on extensive research, the book brings together a widely dispersed body of work: furniture, interiors, exhibitions and graphic design. But its particular achievement lies in what it does with this material. Photographs, drawings, advertisements and archival documents are not simply placed one after another. They enter into new relationships. Images fill entire double pages, documents form dense visual constellations, scale and rhythm constantly change. The graphic design by Beukers Scholma is much more than a frame for the research. It turns the research itself into a visual experience. Rounded edges and translucent section pages add a physical layer to this play of connections. In this sense, the form of the book beautifully reflects its subject: both are built on connections. The result is not simply an exhibition catalogue or an archive. It is a compelling book in its own right –one that makes the world of Kho Liang Ie tangible again.
