When it rains, it… pours? Rocks? 🤔

Educator and contributor @laudyibarra went around Key Biscayne to see if Island kids could finish some well-known idioms. Some nailed it. Others gave us answers, that well… give it a listen. 😂

Idioms can be tricky for any child, and even more so in a multilingual town like #keybiscayne, where so many families speak more than one language at home. Laudy explains why and shares tips for parents and teachers.

Want more? Pick up Wednesday’s Islander for the full story.

The domino effect! 🁣🎓
A game of dominos. A community coming together. More opportunities for students.
Thanks to generous players and sponsors, last week at a local reception, @dominos.for.education awarded $80,000 to three organizations supporting students’ education: @cristoreymiami, @mdcfoundation and @rotaryclubofkeybiscayne.
Since its founding, the Liberty City Scholarship Fund, with @kbcfoundation as its fiscal sponsor, has raised nearly $500,000 and helped nearly 100 students pursue higher education.
Ready to pull up a chair? Save the date for the next Dominos for Education: Saturday, Jan. 16, 2027, at @kbbeachclub.
Follow @dominos.for.education for updates and information on tickets and donations.

A rewarding and busy week for the Islander on the Island, filled with community spirit, generosity and plenty of reasons to celebrate!

We were front and center as @dominos.for.education celebrated the awarding of $80,000 in scholarship funding to three organizations: @mdcfoundation, @cristoreymiami and @rotaryclubofkeybiscayne. A wonderful reminder of what happens when our community comes together to support education and opportunity, creating the Domino Effect.

Along the way, lots of meaningful connections, conversations and laughs with friends and neighbors, and, of course, plenty of delicious Tastecitos.

We also joined the @keybiscaynechamber for the ribbon-cutting celebration welcoming @amand_miami, one of the newest additions to Key Biscayne’s dining scene. 😋

And this week’s Tastecito tip: Planning a catered gathering? We highly recommend the Di Ceci Chopped Salad from @il_mercarto.

Giving back. Celebrating local businesses. Connecting with our community. Another rewarding week on the island!

What will this week bring?

It takes a village… and on Oct. 3, Key Biscayne showed up.

Barbara Diaz and Laura Zapata, co-founders of @ittakesavillagekb, talk with us about the Inclusion and Disability Symposium they organized.

It brought families, advocates, providers and elected officials together to build a more inclusive community for children and adults with disabilities, from the classroom through adulthood.

The panel featured many expert subject matter experts and State and County elected officials and moderated by former NBC 6 reporter Laura Rodriguez.

Thank you to the symposium’s sponsors, @rotaryclubofkeybiscayne and @villageofkeybiscayne among many, for making the day possible.

Pick up your Islander today to read @laudyibarra’s report on the symposium, showing Key Biscayne’s leadership in the special needs spectrum thanks to groups like @ittakesavillagekb

An election-ready week for the Islander on the Island!

We started by publishing our special Be Election Ready issue, complete with a Key Biscayne sample ballot and plenty of #newsyoucanuse to help residents prepare to vote by mail, during early in-person voting beginning Oct. 19, or on Election Day, Nov. 3, at the @keybiscaynecommunitycenter.

The week included a lively Village Council Candidate Forum, co-hosted with our friends at @keybiscaynechamber and a call for reader mini-endorsements. Have you sent yours in? Tell us who you’re supporting and why at editor@islandernews.com. ✍️

We also joined @friendsofcapeflorida and @miamifoundation Press Forward South Florida for a beautiful sunset celebration of Bill Baggs’ birthday at @billbaggsstatepark a fitting setting to announce the launch of the new Fearless Journalist Award honoring his legacy.

Along the way, we celebrated @fulano.miami 3rd year anniversary and wish them well as they continue to serve the Island.

There was plenty of community time and, of course, delicious Tastecitos. We also got to know one of the newest additions to the island’s food scene while enjoying the soft opening of @amand_miami. Give them a taste! 😋

And this week’s Tastecito tip has been a week in the making: We highly recommend the spanakopita at @paraliakeybiscayne inside @ritzcarltonkeybiscayne. The combination of flaky phyllo pastry, spinach and feta was incredible. Worth a try!

Election ready. Celebrating journalism. Community connected. And well fed. 😉

What will this week bring?

SKILLS FOR DRILLS 🩵💙

Bruce Lee said it best: Don’t fear the person who practiced 10,000 kicks once. Fear the one who practiced one kick 10,000 times.

This week we kick! See you poolside 🫡🤙🏽
