Awe. And your smallness. It’s what comes to mind when you see the Milky Way in real life.

Nevada County, you showed up in a big way for the #KeepitDarkContest and 70 local photographers captured and shaded their favorite moments from our dark skies. Fan voting is open thru Aug 28, so cast your vote (link in bio) for your favorite category and join us at the Awards Reception on October 2.

Did you know you can see the Milky Way right here in Truckee, CA?

Our friend @bkcontent shows you how he captured the night sky from Martis Creek Lake, right behind the airport (in Nevada County). He shot it on an A7siii, 15 second exposure, 3200 ISO, 14mm Lens. It was set up for a total duration of 9 hours (9:30pm - 6:30am)

Here in Truckee, we love to keep it dark so we can keep enjoying these wondrous experiences. Plus, it helps our wildlife and saves energy from turning the lights completely out.

On clear nights in Truckee, thousands of stars are visible overhead. The Keep it Dark photo contest is our way to show off the brilliant night skies. The contest is still going, but submissions are only open thru August 12. To inspire you to get out and experience it yourself, we set out a @gopro at Donner Lake. Here’s how we did it (and how you can do the same!), so get out there and experiment with your own gear.

”I set out a GoPro on Donner Lake overnight with the hopes of capturing some star trails. After roughly finding the North Star, I set the GoPro to the star trails mode, 30 second shutter, 1600 iso, everything else was the default settings. It ran for about 5.5 hours until the external battery + internal bather finally ran out.

My helpful tip: scout the location you want to shoot at night during the day. That way you if you end up needing to move or make changes, you’re already familiar with where you’re working.” - @bkcontent
