Los Angeles County Fire’s first Black Air Operations crew chief is Firefighter Paramedic Johnny Gray III.

Johnny serves in one of the department’s most specialized environments, where wildfire aviation, emergency medicine and crew coordination meet. As president of the Los Angeles County Stentorians, his story represents exactly why I created The Color of Fire: to document Black firefighters whose work, leadership and paths through the fire service are too rarely seen.

But no aircraft operates because of one person.

Pilot Tony Weston and Firefighter Paramedic Zach Balderrama serve on the flight crew.
Jesse Bernard is Air Operations’ first female mechanic.
Tyrone Mathis is the first Black mechanic in L.A. County aviation.
Karen Escobar, Intermediate Typist Clerk, supports the daily operation that keeps the section moving.

Every role matters. Every person helps put that helicopter safely into the air and bring it home.

Special thanks to Acting Deputy Chief Pat Sprengel and the entire LACoFD Air Operations Section for opening their doors and allowing me to tell this part of the story.

The fire service is bigger than engines and ambulances.

Please share this so people far beyond Los Angeles can see everyone it takes to make this work possible.

6:00am, When the shift starts, there is the routine.

Morning at Houston Fire Station 21. Washing the apparatus. Checking equipment. Cooking breakfast. Getting ready for whatever comes through the door next.

Rest in Peace Firefighter/Emt Brandy Allinience (21/B)

The Color of Fire is my ongoing documentary record of Firefighters of Color across America, photographed from inside a fire service I’ve been part of for 15 years.

I want to sincerely thank everyone so far that has supported the project, been apart of the project, or have shown interest in being apart of the project. I thank you great deal.

Thank you everyone in Houston!

Houston, Texas. Part I. (Part 2 will feature Station 55)

Can't wait to get back on duty.

I'm nobody special...you just have to want to treat people like people.
Genuinely understand what "servant" means and apply it. Traffic stops can go left... however 8 out of 10 you come in contact with are just regular people. A badge doesn't automatically dictate respect, actions do.
