Belizeans at home and abroad are sending our athletes well wishes to our athletes who are competing tomorrow.

Here Robert Williams, aka Black Wolverine sends his love and support to Team Belize powerlifting. Robert is NAPF2022 Regional Champ for the Master 1, 120kg weight class. Though he's not competing this year, his heart is with Team Belize here in Cayman.

Hurricane Lisa tangled the Sea Scouts bosun sail boats in the mangroves of Seaside Chateau on the coast of Belize city. Mr. Roberto Pott called on us to give a helping hand. The powerlifting crew consisting of @black_wolverine_strong the NAPF masters 1 gold medalist, @kenyonw2022 the 2023 BPA Nationals overall bronze medalist, and myself Kyle Ali the BPA Nationals 93 kg bronze medalist and a member of the Sea Scouts. Helping the team too was my dad @jerome_m_ali . Thanks for the breakfast too Mr. Pott!

This weekend all feels like a dream I'll be real. I am so glad that I managed to place third in the 93 kg class at my first Powerlifting meet. I was up against some really talented guys, and I am so proud of us all and myself. To stand next to @rayford.brown on the podium, the legendary "max out," was an honor, along with @bigrod_92.

I am so grateful to my coach @sturdyleg for his support throughout my powerlifting journey. He had a major impact on my success at the meet being my coach since September. He was there for me every step of the way, and I couldn't have done it without him. Honestly have to say thank you for everything you've done for me. You are a true friend and a mentor. You are the best coach I could ever ask for and I am so grateful to have you in my corner.

Really have to give a special thank you to all the people who came out to watch me compete in the powerlifting meet. Had a whole Pedro squad cheering me on, both in person and watching live!! Your support was what got me through some of the more difficult events and I couldn't have done it without you. Your cheers spurred me on and kept me going throughout the meet. Thank you all so much for coming out to support me. I know that you were the reason I was able to do my best and I am so grateful for your support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

@big_bad_bow_t has overcome a lot both in his personal life and as a competitor coming into this meet. Honestly I am so proud of the man for his strength and perseverance. The man is an amazing person and a role model to all of us. His strength and drive is inspiring.

Lastly I have to say past coach, Alex, had a huge impact on my life. He was an amazing person and a the best fitness coach, the man knew so much about every aspect of working out. He taught me so much not only about lifting, but also about life. His legacy lives on within all of us who have been fortunate enough to have known him. I am so happy to have made him proud and I know that I will continue to do so in the future. He is always with me and I know that he is watching me from above. I will carry on in the sport and continue to honor him with every big lift I hit.

We’re counting down to BPA’s 2023 Nationals and we are two weeks away until our #powerlifting athletes take the platform on Feb. 25th and 26th, 2023 at the SJC Gym in Belize City.

So what kind of athletes compete in powerlifting meets? Actually, the truth may surprise you! At the 2022 BPA Nationals we saw a wide swatch of Belizean lifters take part in the event.

There were:
* husband and wives duo,
* Mother & son duo,
* Mother & daughter duo
* Brother & sister duo,
* Highschool classmates & friends
* Working professionals (teachers, pharmacists, public workers, etc.)
*Fitness trainers and enthusiasts

Basically, people from all walks of Belizean life participated in this exciting new sport in Belize. The BPA hereby invites the Belizean public to come out, support our local strength athletes. Check out the talents of strong Belizeans who aspire to carve out a place in the international powerlifting arena. You don’t want to miss this!

“Powahh!!!"

Our male powerlifting athletes are also in prep mode! If you follow them, you know that they’re putting in the work and fired up for the BIG EVENT!

As we prepare for our 2023 Nationals Powerlifting championships, we take a look back at all athletes who came out and gave it their all. Here we share with you a quick reel of last year’s male athletes. The youngest athlete being Mr. Jahmai Sho a_lost_winner who was only 12 years old (Sub-Junior category) and the oldest powerlifting athlete being Mr. Philip Andrewin in the Master 4 age class (70-79 years old). This is testament that the sport of powerlifting is truly an inclusive one, and we encourage more #Belizeans to train for strength in their fitness routine.

#powerlfiting athletes—we trust this quick trip down memory lane will serve to motivate you further to not only return to the euphoria of being on the platform, but may it also push you to beat your own records (or that of your competition). We can’t wait to witness your strength potential!

Athletes - here’s another reminder the registration closes on Saturday, February 11th, 2023. If you have not registered yet, do it now and don’t get left out. We look forward to seeing you all at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex on Feb. 25th & 26th, 2023. We are counting the days!

The Bench Press….the second lift in a #powerlifting competition.

There are a few rules to follow:
1. The head must be on the bench at all times;
2. Butt needs to be touching the bench throughout the lift;
3. Feet need to be flat on the floor throughout the lift;
4. Hands & Fingers must grip the bar with thumbs wrapped around the bar during the lift.
5. Feet cannot be placed on the bench during set-up;
6. When the lifter is ready, with the bar in hand, motionless, the “start” command is given.
7. When lowering the bar to the chest, the “underside of both elbow joints is lowered level with or below the top surface of each respective shoulder joint.” At this point, the bar needs to remain motionless, after which the “Press” command is given.
8. At this point the lifter is aiming to achieve lockout and then keep the bar motionless once again.
9. At lockout, the lifter waits for the “rack” command to rack the bar.
For more details, visit the IPF website at https://www.powerlifting.sport/fileadmin/ipf/data/rules/technical-rules/english/IPF_Technical_Rules_Book_2023__1_.pdf
Get familiar and practice these rules. They will ensure you yield a “good lift” or “three white lights” on Competition day.

The squat...sounds simple enough. Get under the bar and squat. But for those who plan on competing, there are a few rules you will need to keep in mind as you execute the lift. Judges will be looking for specifics as you go through the movements.

This is a refresher for those who attended the powerlifting seminar held last month. Here we recap that session, as explained by @tom.cl.tsai of @kinetic.fitness.bz. Take a listen.

We also take this opportunity to encourage all lifters who will be competing to become more familiar with the rules of the sport. More detailed info can be found on the website Technical Rules - International Powerlifting Federation IPF www.powerlifting.sport
Happy training!
