🌈 How often do we describe autistic folx without actually listening to autistic folx?

This month, our autistic panelists are tackling one of the most common and misunderstood concepts in autism: “functioning labels.”

What happens when someone is labeled “high functioning”?
What supports become harder to access?
What assumptions get made?
Whose needs are overlooked?
And who gets to define what success, independence, and quality of life actually look like?

We’ll also explore the importance of distinguishing between support needs and perceived “functioning.” Too often, functioning labels oversimplify complex experiences and can obscure the voices of autistic people with moderate and high support needs. Meaningful inclusion requires listening to a broad range of autistic perspectives, especially those whose experiences are frequently underrepresented in autism and ABA conversations.

Join us for an honest discussion about how labels shape power, access, services, expectations, autonomy, and lived experience.

💜 Led by autistic voices
💜 Centering lived experience
💜 Exploring support needs beyond functioning labels
💜 Expanding social validity in ABA
💜 Challenging assumptions and encouraging reflection
