Autumn is well and truly here, with the crisp air, the rain and that lovely soft autumn light creeping into the house 🍂✨The garden is looking greener again after the summer heat, a few bulbs have already popped up and the fallen leaves are making the loveliest golden carpet.

We spent the weekend at our country house, with just a few last bits and bobs to sort before winter comes knocking. Fires lit, hearts full of gratitude and nowhere else we’d rather be. 🐾🍃

I’m back… or at least I keep saying I am! Summer completely swept me away and, somehow, I’m still all over the place, lazily looking at a house whose owners have been away for quite some time… and it shows. 😅

Our trip to Egypt was nothing short of epic. I never imagined such a completely different world could be just a two-hour flight away. I close my eyes and still see the surreal beauty that unfolded before us …

So, slowly but surely, I’m pushing myself to get into the autumn mood, digging out my pumpkins and all that sort of stuff… 🎃
Most of you seem to be way ahead of me, which is slightly stressing me out 😂 but hey, I’ll get there… I’ve got this!

Going, Going, Gone!

If you can make it to Ludlow next week, my friends at @blackbough are having a selling exhibition of over 100 vintage letterpress auction posters and other printed ephemera relating to the town.

The exhibition opens on Thursday August 27th and continues until Saturday August 29th from 10am–5pm. On the Thursday evening they will be serving drinks between 5pm and 8pm. See you there!

Black Bough say:

The listings of lots that are to be auctioned provide a snapshot of what was of value in the last quarter of the 19th century. On the domestic front, there are bedsteads, kitchen requisites, copper tea kettles, cheese dishes and fire irons, as well as fowl pens and cucumber frames.

At agricultural dispersal sales, there are fat cows, store pigs, cart mares and ricks of barley straw.

In a sale held in February 1878, you could also have had the chance to purchase turnip pulpers, a turnip scuffle, a Cambridge roll and 3.5 tons of Hadfield’s manure.

The posters will be available to purchase from the exhibition and any that are unsold will be listed online in the weeks after the show.

🏴‍☠️ Gilbert & Sullivan in a ruined castle, which has awakened my entire am-dram bloodline
🪕 Poetry + harp in Malvern that sounds like exactly the sort of thing I want to disappear into for an evening
📷 Huge-scale photography out in the Herefordshire landscape
🚴‍♀️ Some of the world’s best female cyclists tearing through the Marches
🖨️ Plus old Ludlow letterpress, tiny art and assorted things worth having a nose at

Basically, a very good week to live around here.

Plus many other local creatives also to see, of course.. 🎨🖼️

The swan Coke float straw dispenser from @blackbough is what greets you at @prontoludlow ‘s kiosk hatch. Thankyou to all the Coke float fans, this was a favourite childhood treat of ours and is clearly still very popular !🥤Open til 10 this weekend for @liveatludlowcastle ☀️

Anyone who paid any kind attention at all to my incessant stories recently will be thrilled to know I finally bit the bullet and invested in the garden sofa, courtesy of the big @johnlewis sale 💸😏

For what it’s worth, it was absolutely worth the non-stop pining.

It’s stunning, it’s comfy and stylish as fuck. 💅

I’ve spent the ENTIRE week on it, and providing the British summer doesn’t fuck me over I’ll be doing so for the foreseeable ✌🏼✌🏼

Also is this a garden account now? I’m relentless aren’t I? 🫠

A spaceship has landed in the garden: a WHOPPING new brolly has arrived just in the nick of time for the heatwave. It’s not very pretty, but I am proud of myself for resisting (at the moment..) the high octane jollity of the trendy scalloped edged, pelmeted parasols of which there are hundreds available. Instead this quite boring number is doing a sterling job of keeping both people and plants cool - quite a feat in a south facing walled garden.

Footnote: turns out @isabelbannerman has one in her jardin; if it’s good enough for Isabel, I’m in!

Thanks to @rosbyamshaw for the beautiful gift of a faded tapestry cushion of old roses, looking perfect in the dappled shade of my favourite cool corner. Other pics show self-set valerian growing on top of my wall - and in Raven Lane, where the wonderful dirty grey-green of the house next to it is the perfect foil for the reds and pinks: a deliberate and genius ploy of the previous occupant and which I enjoy every day on my way to town.

WOOOF 😮‍💨

After 4.5 back-breaking days, our little seating area is DONE 🥹😍

6 tonne of soil moved. 3 tonne of gravel. All by hand, because we’re utter lads. And also we didn’t want to pay the £5k we were quoted for someone else to do it ✌🏼

It was bloody hard work and my body is in bits, but I feel a real sense of achievement with this one.
Special shout of to the filing cabinets we turned in to planters, saved a small fortune there!

There’s going to be a couple of phases in this garden reno, but I’m glad to see the end of phase one. 🥵

Roll on those summer nights 🌅⛱️
