Landscapes turned dreamscapes.

This week’s #Spotlight is Oakland-based artist Terri Loewenthal. Her photographs re-imagine the often static view of nature captured by landscape photographers.

Loewenthal’s photographic language overlaps multiple vantage points set against vibrant and oversaturated hues. These imaginative realities aim to capture not the factual reality of a scene but the unseen emotional worlds that lie within them.

Loewenthal’s most recognisable series, Psychscapes, showcases her innovative approach to art through single-exposure, in-camera compositions created with custom optics she personally designed.
She creates utopian dreamscapes that ignite the imagination and shift the way we experience nature.

Championing her is Kathlene Fox-Davies, founder of Black Box Projects, a London-based contemporary gallery and art advisory specialising in photography.

Thank you so very much BlackBox Projects and Kathlene Fox Davies for the most wonderful dinner at Jais in Paris in celebration of photographer Terri Loewenthal whose stunning work is currently being used to front the Opera National Paris 2025 programme and campaign.

An Oakland-based photographer and artist renowned for her innovative approach to landscape photography Terri reimagines this genre by overlapping multiple vantage points and using vibrant, oversaturated hues. She challenged notions of photographic realism instead portraying a rich layered experience of humans and the natural world.

A very special dinner with incredible conversation, laughs, learning and the best of food at Jais – an extra special treat to head home with our very own print. Thank you! 🇫🇷❤️🙏🏼🥂 more to come on this talent on The Wick very soon!

TURNING POINT /

For there is a boundary to looking.
And the world that is looked at so deeply
wants to flourish in love.
Work of the eyes is done, now
go and do heart-work
on all the images imprisoned within you; for you
overpowered them: but even now you don’t know them.
Learn, inner man, to look at your inner woman,
the one attained from a thousand
natures, the merely attained but
not yet beloved form.

Turning-Point

Joanne Dugan / Persistent Awakening

Where the earlier Turning Point series found beauty in the chaos and light from the darkness, Joanne Dugan’s later work is defined by meditative repetition and reoccurring forms constructed from abstracted shadows and structured grid lines. The abstracted compositions in each small work brought together by the structure and order of the grid allows for the serially of her work and surprising movement within the rhythm of the repetition.

Joanne Dugan’s most recent work has taken on a decidedly painterly quality within her cameraless photographic compositions.

Perhaps one of the most ambitious pieces by the artist in our gallery collection, Transcendence #2 is a masterwork of deceptive simplicity. Here Dugan presents a composition of movement, light and serenity brought together from 128 individual photographic works.

Image: Joanne Dugan, Transcendence #2, 2019, Mounted collage of 128 individually cut, handmade 1” x 7” silver gelatin photographs on a 32” x 37.75” 8-ply museum board, framed in a handmade white box frame with museum glass, Unique

Looking back at an incredible evening spent with the inimitable artist, Macarena Rojas Osterling, as she shared insight into her practice which is deeply rooted in personal identity, cultural influences and the duality of being both an artist and a mother. It was a special night amongst friends new and old and an exciting launch to what will be a landmark year for the artist, with her first monograph being released next week, an upcoming gallery exhibition in March and a museum show later this year. Thank you @macarenarojasstudio for sharing your time and expertise with us. Thank you also to @saskia.vidler and @abra___arba for photographing the evening, and @carriescottcurates and @olympicstudios for co-hosting the evening with me and @blackboxprojects #macarenarojasosterling #bbp_art #olympicartclub #femaleartist #peruvianartist #worksonpaper #blackboxprojects
