'NORTHERN SOUL' - 5 Years Old Today! I wrote a song last night which had a nostalgic feel to it, completely unaware it was this track's 5 year anniversary today. As I sit here, I've wrote and created almost 3 albums. You have one. One is sat ready to go and will be released this year. The third is well on its way, and I honestly feel like it's a whole different world compared to my other stuff. But, listening back to this, this morning, I feel proud of the quality of the work we've put out on literally next to nothing, and reminded that just being yourself is enough. This track proved that my own story resonates with others, and that no one can tell your story like you can. So note to self, start telling it again! BlackCloudTV - Prose & BLZ Freestyle (2012) Born out of Sale, Manchester by James Killeen, BlackCloud TV was a raw YouTube platform where UK underground rap met freestyle fire — capturing MCs live, in the moment, with no filters. It became the go-to space for artists to showcase pure talent, build grassroots cred, and connect with the city’s scene long before the label lights flickered on. Prose, from Stretford just south of the city centre, made music that sounded like where he was from — honest, grounded, and full of heart. Before any label deal, Mike ‘Prose’ Murray was hitting Manchester’s open-mics and small venues, blending acoustic warmth with hip-hop grit. In that freestyle, he brought the same raw, grammatical lyricism — stories of family, graft, and finding light in grey-skied Manchester. A full 10boroughs feature on both Prose and BlackCloud TV was on the way. BLZ made his name in Manchester’s underground long before any spotlight hit. From his hometown of Stretford to basement freestyles and youth club sets, he thrived on raw lyricism, city ambition, and street-sharp storytelling. His early tracks weren’t polished — they were real, echoing nights on Salford flats, late treks from Piccadilly, and the pulse of the 0161. If you've followed me for a while, you'll know I love a bit of BTS, and I ALWAYS big up the crew! This is the largest crew we've ever had on a shoot. Honestly, I thought I knew a fair bit about film shoots. I didn't. But I learnt a lot more on this one! Rather than speaking on people individually, all I have to say is that every single member of that crew played their part phenomenally. Half of the shoot was in a very personal location, and they were nothing but well-mannered and professional, even when it ran a few hours over the intended cut-off time. Despite this being the largest crew we've ever had on a shoot, I'm still not at the level where I can afford to have a stand-in while they line the shot up. So, as I wasn't meant to move much, I asked one of the producers @ijazrana_ if he could pass me a bottle of water. This just so happened to coincide with @jameskilleendop having his camera out, to which he took FULL advantage of the situation 😂. I'm very grateful to the whole crew on this one. It began as a very wet, miserable day, where we were shooting the most important scene of the video. They showed nothing but professionalism the whole way through. All top lads, pulling together for a great cause! In May 2023, we lost a very special man. The most talented artist my area has ever produced. He was a friend of mine. We weren't the closest, and I know there are people who follow me on here who were far closer to him than I ever was. But we shared some memories, and since his passing, I found myself thinking about him most days. The only way I've ever known to truly express myself is to write about it. I wanted to pay my respects through lyrics in some way, but I wasn't sure how. One day, these words came to my mind, and I wrote them down. On the first anniversary of his passing, I had the privilege to perform this track for the first time in front of his closest family and friends at a memorial event. After I'd finished, I asked the people there if they wanted the song to stay there with them, as a one time thing, or if they wanted me to release it properly and hopefully contribute to extending the memory of Josh. 'Growing Pains'. 6 Today. Before I was reminded of this, I'd spent a few hours this morning reflecting on how different my life was 10 years ago. It was around this time (beginning of April), I'd made another massive mess of my life at the time and knew I had to do something to stop going down this path. I made the first step by reaching out for help. It would be another couple of months of falling short before I was able to finally give in and accept I couldn't change things on my own. But once I did, it's been some journey, I can tell you that! Thinking about this today, I didn't even realise I released this track around this time. But I'm not surprised it's happened that way. Thank you for the birthday messages. Big 35! 5 years ago today I released 7:15. This track was written during a period of massive change for me when I'd decided I'd had enough of constantly bringing shit into my life. I got humble and asked for some help. Listened to what I was given and started implementing it into my life. On my 28th birthday, I went to the studio with @jsd_mcr, who I'd met a few months earlier, and we made this. Put it out two years later on my 30th, accompanied by another perfectly executed visual by my day one @jameskilleendop. 5 and 0s feel like key timestamps to me. I always reflect on how I've progressed over the last 5-10 years. And if ya can't get a bit sentimental on your birthday, when can ya. My life today is so far away from where it was 10 years ago. Except some of the people in it. There's some new ones. There's some that aren't in it anymore. But there's plenty that are still the same! I don't know much, but what I do know is, if I keep doing what I'm doing, it can only get better! I must like dropping videos in September... 'BE YOURSELF' 5 YEARS OLD TODAY! It actually caught me a bit off guard when I saw that this morning. I remember flying to Hamburg with @jameskilleendop with nothing but a camera, gimble and a very cheap LED light and a vision that we'd make something that represented the dark and gritty yet mellow sound of this track me and @jsd_mcr had cooked up on the first studio session where I'd actually turned up and said "I've got no idea what to make today". 3 hours later, we had this, and it became the title track of my first EP. Mad to think that was probably 6/7 years ago now. A lot has changed since then, but the people I'm working with are still the same! 'Growing Pains' is 5 years old today. The first track I ever created with @jsd_mcr (in 2017, 2 years before its release). We're still creating music together to this day, putting some of the finishing touches on my second album this week. The first visual I created with @jameskilleendop that got some form of recognition. You already know what's followed on from there. Regardless of the success of my own music, James is now working with the biggest artists in the UK, exactly where he should be! Big shout to @tb_kwu who played a huge part in this one, too. The graft that went into these early videos with zero budget and making the most of what we had is definitely something special. Sometimes I have to remind myself to post this stuff because I feel like I should be posting new music all the time. But it's important to be proud of what you have done. That's not living in the past. It's honouring the work you've already put in. It doesn't mean you deserve any more, or any less.
