When we launched our online shop in 2024, we had no idea that sourcing locally spun Armenian wool was a challenge that we would face. At one point, we could not find any Armenian wool yarn to fulfill our orders, and were forced to halt production until we could find it from local cottage producers.

According to research conducted by our partners at @arm.wool, 90% of the wool produced by Armenia's sheep today, approximately 1.4 million kilograms annually, is tossed or burned due to a lack of demand. That is why we are so grateful to @arm.wool for tackling this challenge head on, turning local wool from waste into a viable byproduct for local shepherds, increasing quality, linking heritage practitioners both locally and internationally, and strengthening the local value chain for handmade rugs.

For creators, artists, and artisans looking for handspun Armenian wool, get in touch with @arm.wool!

One of the biggest joys of doing what we do at The Rug Code is working directly with local artisans here in Armenia, like the women of @telik_crafts.

Handmade rugs are special because of the human hands that go into making them, from the shepherds and shearers, to the yarn spinners and dyers, to the weavers, all the way to the washers and finishers. Each artisan puts their personal story, and thousands of years of collective stories and ancestral knowledge into each rug.

Facilitating the connection between their stories and craft, and you, is what we love to do most. Learn more about Telik Crafts and the other collectives of weavers we're proud to represent at therugcode.com. Link in bio.

According to local superstition, a weaver's tools must never touch the ground, for just as the final rug is sacred, so are the tools used to make them.

The superstition may have practical application — if you drop your tool to the ground, like your beater pictured here, you risk damaging or breaking it upon impact.

It's superstitions and stories like this that make the world of Armenian rugs so rich. Uncovering the cultural depth of this craft is part of what keeps us going here in Armenia.

While a regular flat weave (aka carpet) can be woven quite quickly by an experienced weaver, the shulal technique is a much slower and laborious process, requiring twice if not three times the time required for a regular flat weave. It all comes down to the complexity of the design and the amount of relief ornaments included.

Looking for a custom shulal flat weave you don't see on our online shop? We'll design it at no extra charge and handmake it just for you. Let us know what you have in mind by contacting us here or by writing hello@therugcode.com

Therapy. Relaxation. Community.

These are some of the words we frequently hear from the coders (aka weavers) we have the pleasure of working with here in Armenia when asked what weaving means to them. We feel blessed to be able to carry on Armenia's 4,000-year-old weaving heritage with local partners like @telik_crafts, pictured here.

Meet another local coder (aka weaver) from Telik Crafts who we’re very proud to represent: Stella Ghazaryan.

Stella joined Telik in 2021 at a moment when her life had been irreversibly changed by the realities of war. Her story is one of love, profound loss, resilience, and finding a place within a community of women weavers. We’re humbled and priveleged to know and work with women like Stella.

Swipe to meet one of the newest coders (aka weavers) we have the great pleasure of working with and representing: Liana Ghazaryan from @telik_crafts in Ijevan, Tavush Province.

When we sat down with her to learn more about her artistic practice, she remembered a local superstition from her childhood. “When someone was sick, people in the old days would hang a rug on the wall above their bed, believing that the power of the rug would heal them. That’s our attitude towards rugs.”

Swipe through to read about how Liana started weaving, and head to therugcode.com to meet more local coders from Telik Crafts. By purchasing a handmade rug through our online shop, you provide her and other rural coders with stable, meaningful work. Link in bio.

Shulal Kids, our newest handmade rug collection from Armenia, was born out of a simple idea: introduce a new generation of Armenians and non-Armenians alike to the cultural and natural heritage of the country through playful, childlike flat weaves.

Like many of our rugs, the original designs of the collection were born the old-fashioned way: with colored pencils and paper. Working together with Telik Crafts, we combined some of Armenia’s most recognizable fables, cultural practices, historical sites, and landscapes into seven hand-drawn images that the women of the collective translated into woven form, with many of the coders (aka weavers) improvising on colors, textures, and patterns.

Head to therugcode.com to discover the full collection and see what Armenian tales we're weaving into pieces you can have in your life or the life of a child near you. Link in bio.
