Day One of CultureCon felt like a study in people, community, style and legacy. I spent the day moving through rooms filled with people who are actively shaping media, culture and politics… from Mayor Zohran Mamdani (@nycmayor) to Michael B. Jordan (@michaelbjordan) , along with so many creatives, storytellers and people pushing conversations forward in their own way. But some of my favorite moments weren’t necessarily on the stages. They were amongst the people. Talking to attendees about what brought them to CultureCon this year… what they were looking forward to… and, naturally, what they were wearing. I mean, I’m still me. 😂 Keeping a little of that SoHo Chronicles spirit alive wherever I go. One thing that really stayed with me was seeing friends and influencers I know walking around the event with their parents. There was something beautiful about that. You spend so much time seeing someone’s work, personality, influence or success… and then suddenly you’re standing beside the people and the families that helped shape who they became. It made me think differently about community. And legacy. And where all of this actually starts. There was another funny duality happening for me this year too… I love getting dressed. I love presenting myself in a way that feels like me, but also makes people feel comfortable enough to walk up, say hello and start a conversation. Usually I’m the one stopping people for a fit check. This year? I think just as many people stopped ME for one. 😂 Being on both sides of the microphone was definitely a different experience. All in all, Day One was full of color, melanin, knowledge, fashion, familiar faces, new connections and a reminder that CultureCon (@culturecon) #really is about something much bigger than any one person in the room. Over the spring and summer I was commissioned to create a body of imagery for Black Eyewear, the independent British eyewear brand founded and designed by Robert Roope, built on his five decades of experience as an optician. The brand has a deep connection to the cultural history of eyewear, drawing heavily on the frames and spirit of the 1950s and 60s, alongside Robert’s lifelong love of jazz. Many of the frames are named in honour of legendary musicians. For this project, I wanted to tap into that heritage, but look at it from a contemporary point of view: the people wearing the frames today, and the places and personalities that surround them. Mostly shot around London, I’m grateful to everyone I had the chance to collaborate with on this project: @hobbicik @frankidles @charlielauren @thenomadicgent @kalicrame and @himbeau94 And of course, a big thank you to the Black Eyewear team for trusting me with the creative freedom to make the work my own. Introducing our Issue 40 cover star, Leon Bridges (@leonbridges) 🕶️ For Leon Bridges, this year marks the beginning of a new chapter. With his fifth album, Happiness Anytime, Bridges swaps ballads for the dancefloor — and a lifelong wariness of the spotlight for something like joy. Each beat in the record is infused with the infectious rhythms and communal spirit of Jamaican dancehall culture, marking a distinctive shift from Bridges’ usual soul-baring discography. “My strengths are ballads and very introspective [lyrics],” he tells us. Happiness Anytime, which will be released via Columbia Records tomorrow, 25 September, and was produced by two-thirds of the British trio Jungle (@jungle4eva) — Josh Lloyd-Watson and Lydia Kitto — became what Bridges describes as a “freeing experience”. “I think the whole idea was to, kind of, cultivate a new sound,” Bridges explains. “Everything unfolded organically and it was super collaborative.” With a new sound came a new image, naturally. A star is born, clad in Diesel (@diesel) leather and blackout sunglasses. But from his experience growing up in Texas to navigating life in the public eye, Bridges never craved the spotlight. Walt disco (@waltdisco) have been at this for almost a decade, and by their own admission, haven’t yet “made it” — at least not in the conventional sense. But their new self-titled album is less of a concession than a recommitment. “It’s okay to go through ebbs and flows before you see the result you want,” says vocalist Jocelyn Si. “If you listen to this album and still think it’s glam rock, you’re being a bit daft,” says drummer Jack Martin, pushing back on a label the band can’t quite shake. “A lot of journalism is lazy — people will still name band members who haven’t been in the band for years.” Changing the name would have offered an easy way out, but instead walt disco chose to force the correction themselves. Central to that correction is Glasgow. Introducing our SOUND BITE Issue 00 cover stars, walt disco (@waltdisco) 🪩 A decade into their journey, the Glaswegian five-piece nearly scrapped their name to realign with the new image they were creating. Instead, they doubled down, putting walt disco in bold on the cover of their upcoming album, as a testament to their storied history. Landing 2 October, the self-titled third album is a fearless sonic diary of selfhood. It spans everything from drummer Jack Martin’s existential “what ifs” about choosing an unstable creative path, to the politically charged reality of navigating transgender healthcare. For lead vocalist Jocelyn Si, tracks like ‘Look Out For Me’ — written the day she finally saw a GP about gender dysphoria — lay the band’s journey completely bare. Bracing herself for systemic cruelty, she was met instead with genuine empathy. “I realised how wrong it is that her basic kindness felt like a miracle,” Si notes, hoping the song spotlights the dire state of trans healthcare.  Trialling these unreleased songs in a packed room at Paper Dress Vintage proved to the band that authenticity always wins. “People smell bullshit,” says Si. By choosing honesty over industry compliance, walt disco have crafted an album and identity that stands as testament to sticking it out on your own terms.
