Day 19 of 31 Black Disabled Pioneers. 🖤💛❤️💚

Leroy F. Moore Jr. (born 1967) was born with cerebral palsy. He is a poet, activist and the founder of Krip-Hop Nation, a movement built to centre Black disabled voices in music and hip-hop for over 30 years.

He has written, performed and organised to make sure Black disabled history and culture aren’t left out of the conversation. His book, Black Disabled Ancestors, researching the very people honoured across this booklet, is part of what inspired this whole range.

Black history and disability history belong together. I’m honouring a Black disabled pioneer every day this month, and I’m so glad you’re here for it.

Follow along for all 31 pioneers, and get my Black History Month t-shirt, link in bio. 🖤💛❤️💚

Unhoused, formerly houseless, disabled youth, families, and elders from California have created a movie about their lives and their ancestors lost to the ongoing violence of homelessness, evictions, gentrification, poLice terror, and sweeps across the US and are bringing it to the South.

The Southern UnTour honors houseless ancestors from Atlanta, North & South Carolina and beyond. On Thursday, October 22, Crushing Wheelchairs will premiere in Durham with the cast and crew in attendance for a panel discussion with local residents. This screening is timely, as the city just violently crushed another camp in Durham last week.

From Cornelius Taylor killed by a bulldozer in a sweep in Atlanta, to Abdul Wright who died on the streets of Charlotte, NC, and so many more unknown houseless residents who die every year across the US, Houseless and formerly houseless cultural workers from Oakland, Ca, who call themselves “povertyskolaz” bring the ground-breaking movie they have created about their lives and their communities’ lives in poverty to four cities in the South beginning with MoreHouse College in Atlanta & wrapping up in Durham.

Follow @crushingwheelchairsmovie for more screening dates and locations and purchase tickets via the Give Butter link 🔗 in bio. If you cannot attend the screening, please consider making a donation to help support travel expenses.

🎙️ New Episode of The Independent is Out!

In Episode 9 of The Independent, the podcast from the Center for Independent Living (CIL), host Dr. Victor Pineda sits down with Leroy F. Moore Jr. (poet, writer, founder of Krip-Hop Nation, and co-founder of Sins Invalid) for a powerful conversation exploring the intersections of race, disability, and art.

Leroy has spent decades creating spaces where disabled artists, especially Black and Brown disabled creators, are seen, heard, and celebrated. Together, they discuss:

-How poetry and hip-hop became Leroy’s tools for justice.

-The global impact of Krip-Hop Nation and disabled musicians worldwide.

-How Sins Invalid transformed conversations about disability, sexuality, and beauty.

-What true solidarity looks like across racial justice, disability justice, and the arts.

-The challenges disabled artists face in media and cultural institutions, and how we can challenge ableism together.

-Practical resources for listeners and the voices Leroy wants to uplift

This is a conversation about creativity, community, and building a more inclusive cultural future.
