Griot Museum of Black History
St. Louis, MO

*** Disclaimer*** Pictures or videos are not allowed inside.

The Griot Museum of Black History is a cultural institution located in the Old North St. Louis neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, dedicated to exploring and preserving regional and national African American history and culture.

Established in February 1997 as the Black World History Wax Museum by founder and CEO Lois D. Conley, later renaming to honor West African griots (traditional storytellers and keepers of culture).

It is the first cultural institution in St. Louis solely dedicated to Black history and only the second museum of its kind in the nation to use life-size wax figures to interpret historical narratives.

Houses an authentic 19th-century slave cabin originally built on the Wright-Smith Plantation in Jonesburg, Missouri, and dismantled/rebuilt inside the gallery.

Includes documentary video presentations and a scale-model section of a slave ship mirroring the dimensions used during the Middle Passage.

38 years.

That's what Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III gave the Smithsonian, and he is now retiring at the end of the year.

He's the one who took an idea and built the National Museum of African American History and Culture, right there on the National Mall where millions have since walked through it.

This is why museums like ours exist. Our history doesn't keep itself...Somebody has to hold onto it. Somebody has to preserve the stories that inspire.

AAAM in Philadelphia this summer was special for us, and the time we spent in his presence is the part we keep coming back to. He gave us his attention, his stories, and his time. You don't forget that.

Thank you, Secretary Bunch. Job well done--we've got it from here.

Thank you to Dr. Michael Eric Dyson and Senator Vincent Hughes for joining us at AAAM 2026 for the closing plenary session and speaking about the critical role that museums play in safeguarding Black art, history, and culture. We were honored to have their voices included in this year's conference.

Senator Hughes was honored to join Dr. Michael Eric Dyson on a panel hosted by the Association of African American Museums that was part of their ‘This Land Holds Our Stories’ conference. The panel was moderated by Dr. Ashley Jordan,President & CEO, African American Museum in Philadelphia.

The panel talked about the importance of preserving and protecting Black history and continuing the work to support arts and culture organizations and museums that tell our stories. Thank you to AAAM for coming to Philly to host this and many other vital conversations about OUR stories and ancestry, especially as we see the Trump Administration try to erase Black history, like they have done with the President’s House exhibit.

We encourage you to follow and learn more about AAAM online!

We kicked off summer like we always do at @wyso91.3 in Yellow Springs coming together to connect and onboard our summer interns. This summer was a special one as we welcomed two interns for the first time: Chanah Dunham, HU alumna, and Jasmine Sears, TSU alumna. We were excited to have them join us as we traveled, learned, and continued the work of preserving HBCU radio history.

From one returning ceremony for Central State University to four site visits across Alabama A&M, Oakwood University, Alabama State University, and Winston-Salem, three preservation visits to North Carolina A&T State University, Norfolk State and Virginia State University, and collecting 14 oral histories our summer was certainly filled with opportunities for training, professional development, conferencing, and enriching ourselves through museum histories and the stories held within these important cultural spaces.

From station visits to preservation work and from conversations to new connections #Summer2026 was one to remember. 📻✨

Vibe with me for 4 minutes 🦋📸
I had the pleasure of photographing the iconic @marshaambrosius at @AAMP’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee with @blackmuseums . Getting to capture an artist I’ve admired for, can we say… DECADES?! Crazy. And beautiful.

Camera in one hand, ice cream in the other 😂🍦it’s safe to say I was living my best life.

I hope these images carry even a little of the bliss I felt while creating them. What a beautiful reminder that sometimes the work you prayed for looks a lot like joy. 🤍

Some events you photograph. Others you feel incredibly grateful just to witness. 🤎
I had the honor of joining @blackmuseums in Philadelphia to photograph @aampmuseum 's 50th Anniversary Jubilee, and what a beautiful celebration of Black history, culture, community, and joy it was.
☀️From the food and fellowship to the @urbanguerillaorchestra music, the @fletcherstreeturbanridingclub , and ending the evening photographing @marshaambrosius with @djdiamondkuts it was one of those assignments that reminded me exactly why I love what I do. 💕

Because our history doesn’t only live behind museum walls. It’s alive in our music, our traditions, our laughter, our families and in the stories we continue creating together.
50 years of preserving our history…and so much history still left to make. 🤎
Congratulations, #AAMP. It was an absolute privilege to help preserve this chapter through my lens.

You were good to us, #AAAM2026!

We're especially proud of our staff members Garrad Lee, Alissa Rae Funderburk, Angela Stewart, and Anastasia Taylor, who all presented on panels about the legacy of Margaret Walker and the work of the center during this year's conference.

As always, we appreciate everyone who attended the panels, asked questions, and provided feedback. See you next year! Six people pose together behind tables in a conference room. There are coffee cups and papers spread across the tables.

Congratulations are in order for Mekhi DeLeon, senior History of Art & Design major/ Museum & Gallery Practices minor.

Mekhi was recently awarded the Margaret T.G. Burroughs and Charles H. Wright Fellowship by the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) @blackmuseums

Each year, the AAAM recognizes two emerging museum professionals demonstrating excellence in interpreting and preserving African American and African Diaspora history, art, and culture.

The fellowship honors the founders of the AAAM. In the late 1960s, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, founder of the SABB Museum in Chicago, and Dr. Charles H Wright, of the museums of African-American history in Detroit, initiated a series of conferences for black museums.
