GHS race 2026 part 2/2 “the feels” The Golden Horseshoe Race as a 7 day mindfulness exercise 🙃
It is very hard to find flow on this course, it is forever changing from road to trail to hike a bike, to wrong turn, flooded trail, steep uphill to bomb down sketchy descent… i found that as the terrain changed, so did my mood, a lot. Wonder, awe, to total stoke to impatience, frustration, and fear. I constantly reminded myself that nothing is permanent, for good and bad. It was an exercise in holding on lightly and moving through, surrendering to some degree, and finding joy in the process.

This event was not originally planned in my season but some other events didn’t pan out and i was struggling with life transitions, getting older, etc and the idea of having another crack at the Golden Horseshoe kept coming back up in my head. I was never really thinking of “racing” (i am so inexperienced at this type of event, i couldn’t possibly “race”) but thought that a week playing bikes in the woods by myself might be exactly what I needed to sort myself out at this point. Of course, anyone could just go ride their bike anytime but something about an organized event raises the stakes, the social pressure a little, and the likelihood that i’ll push a little harder when things get hard. And, discovering a course carefully curated by someone else is most often a treat. @theokelsey_ built in lots of treats 😉 Even though i saw no other racers after day 1, the sense of community out there cannot be underestimated ❤️ it meant a lot to know other folks were going through it with me.
Full moon, big starry skies, sunsets, sunrises, sheets of rain…An absolute privilege to be able to disconnect from life’s responsibilities and spend a week entirely focused on myself and the challenge of moving forward through the elements. So very happy to have mindfully made it through the wilderness and made it home with a heart full of peace and possibility.

Now to hang on to that feeling…got the tattoo to remind myself just how lucky i am 🧲❤️

GHS 2026 race, part 1/2 “the tech”.

I think I can say that this used marketplace Juliana Wilder (affectionately named Amethyst) and I are now well acquainted. What a treat to go on the most immersive Ontario fall colours 🍁experience together! Last year, I felt underbiked so went the other direction this year. I think a hardtail would likely be perfect for this route (in case anyone wants to hook a girl up 🙏😉), but sometimes, the best bike is the one you have and I credit the full sus to not feeling particularly beat up, which, I greatly appreciate after a long history of injuries. I did swap out the cockpit to have drop bars/aerobars as that felt very familiar. @rideshimano xtr derailleur was perfect through 2 1/2 di2 batteries with MANY shifts! mostly in the 51 or the 10 (with 32t front), very little time in the middle gears as the terrain was largely either up or down.

There were gorgeous trails I had never ridden, beauty forest roads, some smooth rolling pavement (hwy 60 corridor under the light of the moon with 0 traffic is pretty sweet!) mixed in with steep chunky hike a bike rock sections that seemed to go on forever with no flow, and flooded atv trail (the beavers are either having a really good year or a really bad one…🤷‍♀️). I used pretty much every piece of gear I brought and not a whole lot I would change. I really wanted to finish well and whole so played it very cautiously, sacrificing speed, especially around steep rocky descents, in the dark and in the rain particularly. Some parts are very remote and even with an InReach SOS, it could take a LONG time for an extraction. I also took extra care of my feet and saddle area, particularly through all the water crossings. The signature @peppermint_cycling bibs were once again the choice for long days in the saddle and ability to pee without removing all the upper layers. Lots of ways could be faster but I really didnt want to risk getting hurt and another DNF. The body held up remarkably and I am so pleased! 🥇woman (4th overall)

Super fun bike, really hard course that kept me guessing and working and rewarded with views and fun trails (type 1 and 2 🙃)
