“Role model visibility is critical.”

Rather than a typical Halloween on 31 October, I deviated and decided to go for a night of inspiration at ‘Building Tomorrow: Black Visionaries Shaping London’s Tech Landscape’ by @sglondon and @supremefactory_ in honour of #BlackHistoryMonth.

My key learning was being the ‘only one in the room’ can make a difference to others – and while it may be difficult, it is much needed. It is easy to point out that I was the anomaly in that space: the only East Asian as well as New Zealander, still very lost, quite exhausted from the never-ending job and accommodation searching challenges, and nowhere near high calibre compared to the other attendees. But as I have come to realise, aren’t we all human – unique in our own ways, deserving of respect and connection, with something to contribute?

Other insights from the panel discussion:

💡 Don’t let biases impede your vision and ultimately what you want to achieve. Biases are a fact of life, but you have a choice as to what you do.

💡 If people are misbehaving, call them out – otherwise they will keep doing it to others in the future.

💡 Many investors have a KPI of ‘tick the box on talking to diverse founders’, so be careful on their intentions.

💡 Being technical or knowing how to code is not the only thing that someone can contribute in the technology sector. There are many roles that you can get involved with.

💡 By networking, people will put your name forward to opportunities that you aren't aware of. It’s a way to help each other and give back.

Thanks to all of the new friends I made that evening for a special introduction to London!
