This was a really enjoyable project and another opportunity to learn more about making sliding doors and building furniture with new techniques.

For this desk, I deliberately tried a few different methods and machines to explore techniques I hadn’t used before. One of them was the Shaper BenchPilot, which I used for the first time on this project.

I have to say, it’s an incredibly practical tool, especially when you’re working alone. It can help speed up certain parts of the process while keeping the work precise and controlled. What I appreciate most is how simple it is to use. Sometimes a tool is so intuitive that it’s difficult to explain its value until you’ve actually used it yourself.

For the finish, I used Rubio Monocoat. I mixed Black with Pure to achieve the deep, dark tone I was looking for. That slightly softer black is one of my favorite finishes for this type of furniture because it allows the character of the wood to remain visible.

One detail I consider very important with a sliding door is finishing it before assembling and gluing everything together. In this case, I completed the sliding door first and then applied a clear 2K lacquer. Doing this while the components are still accessible makes the finishing process much easier and helps achieve a cleaner result.

I’m always trying to improve my woodworking by experimenting with new techniques, learning from the process, and sharing what I discover along the way. There is always something new to learn, no matter how long you’ve been making furniture.

For this project, all of the lumber came from [YOUR LUMBER SOURCE].

The desk is finished.

This was a phenomenal project and such a rewarding process. I learned a lot along the way while experimenting with new techniques with the @shapertools benchpilot different approaches, and details I had never worked with before.

The combination of walnut and ash, with the tambour door as a standout detail, gives the desk a minimal and timeless look while still keeping it interesting.

Really happy with how it turned out and, most importantly, with everything I learned during the process. #woodworking #furnituredesign #customfurniture #finewoodworking #walnutfurniture
