New Review - a collection of tales that should relax the mind I really enjoyed Sailing the Golden Chersonese by @blackwolfsings out now! https://www.runalongtheshelves.net/blog/2026/9/15/sailing-the-golden-chersonese-by-joyce-chng

Praise for Aether and Ego from @blackwolfsings #booksta #bookstagram @inannapub "If you love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, you will enjoy Aether and Ego. Steampunk, the Regency in space - but interspersed with gardens and a lovely metaphor comparing life with a garden. Grab some Lady Grey, butter sandwiches and enjoy the book." - Joyce Chng, author of Fire Heart and Wolf's Path

Screenshots from my virtual panels at #Worldcon this weekend! Ended up doing 6 panels & 1 virtual reading (the last of which I forgot to take a screenshot for.)

*Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Magical Realism*, mod. Kimlyn Stanyon, feat. Joyce Chng, Reuben "Tihi" Hayslett & me brought up a bunch of parallels btw the enchanted everyday in both Mexico (where Tihi is resident) & SG, w Tihi suggesting that the expectation of realism is a colonial mentality... but which also got complicated when I pointed out that I'm stanning not only García Márquez & Mo Yan but also Jeanette Winterson & Angela Carter. Slides from a v brief presentation I did about magical realism in China & Southeast Asia!

*Gods Did WHAT?! Creation Stories from Around the World*, mod. Alana M. Vincent, feat. Cheryl Morgan, Juliette Wade, Sean Mead & me, ended up being taken up by an intro where we recounted creation myths—Sumerian, Shinto, Maya & Bugis respectively, to which Alana pointed out none of us were covering our own cultures. I explained I'd chosen Bugis partly cos I'm trying to promote awareness of more indigenous Southeast Asian perspectives & also cos it was super queer (bissu ftw!), but also got to talk about the Chinese myth of Pangu. (Really sad that Sonia Sulaiman had to drop out last min!)

*Reimagining the Dragon: Fantasy Worlds of East and SE Asia*, mod. me, feat. Joyce Chng, K. M. Enright & Wen-yi Lee, was a bit of a hoot: as I pointed out, this might've a hashtag-diversity panel, but we were *not* v diverse, consisting of 3 Chinese SGans who write queer sh*t & a Pinoy American—& also, "dragon" is a weirdly basic way to characterise Asian fantasy. Fun times talking about the early dearth of Asian Anglophone fantasy (neither Joyce nor Wen-yi could 100% relate to the wuxia of Channel 8) & its current growth; our shared love of horror & the realisation that actually all 3 of em were happily incorporating "Western" elements into Asian settings: werewolves, vampires, pyrokinetic powers that were actually from ATLA.

Remember how @nationallibrarysg made a What If? exhibition of SG fantasy & sci-fi works in conjunction w @imaginariad's Portals show? At the prompting of @blackwolfsings, they decided to invite all the authors featured for an evening together at Portals... the v same night I had tickets to Wild Rice's new show 😭

I decided to pop over at 7pm anyway, just to say hi to the early birds. Left to right, we've got Scott Graham, me, Terence Chua, Joyce Chua, someone I can't recognise, Low Ying Ping, Joyce Chng, someone else I can't recognise, Pan Huiting & Gwee Li Sui. First time meeting some of these folks! SG is small, but authors aren't always that social. Lots more writers turned up later, but not sure who!

Wish the photo had turned out better—Scott tried to warn me about that later, but I couldn't wait a moment longer before rushing off for Tunggu Sekejap. More about that in my next post—& don't miss this exhibition, cos it's closing on 2 September, fleeting as the summer.

Wolf's Path, by Joyce Chng. A collection of 20-something speculative short stories, poems & commentaries, written from 2009 to 2025, by one of SG's first SFF authors to venture into the international scene! The author's v much structured this as a career retrospective, dividing it btw eras of their career: New Trails, Terrain & The Land, marking the development of their literary ideas—& also arguably their identity: it's only from "Yao Jin" (2012) onwards that we get explorations of queer rather than heterosexual romance, "The Lessons of the Moon" (2015) where they talk about disability; "Diary of War" (2017) & "The Bridge" (2018) where they start to explore nonbinary identity. (OK, maybe there's a hint of it in "A Sky Full of Swiftlets" (2013)?)

Vivid motifs show up in multiple stories, e.g. Peranakan Chinese identity (often expressed as being Chinese, but non-confirming), femininity & its discontents, apocalyptic visions of war & invasion (v clearly coloured by WW2 memory), travel by boat & by flight, & a deep sympathy w monsters (both social outcasts & literal demons). Also fascinating fantastical worldbuilding: a society thriving w pretas (hungry ghosts) & dakinis (fearsome goddesses hunting them) in "Yao Jin", the cave domain of a tiger king right out of Chinese myth in "I Found an Urn Full of Ashes" (he ends up mpregging a hot male ghost!), the cynical superhero world of "Silver Wings" (a porn actress reluctantly discovers that she's turning into a vigilante, just like her nagging mum). Plus a whole bunch of stories that might be poems or vice versa: "The Bridge", "My Soul Is Wolf", "Treacle Blood". (Come to think of it, these emerge later: another aspect of their literary development.)

So impressed with these homegrown authors of speculative fiction who have made it overseas. Love the never-give-up attitudes of @author.eliane @megancheewrites & @blackwolfsings

They’ve triumphed despite agent rejections, ghosting, manuscripts that never made it past submission. And our reading universe is richer for it.

Even more impressed with how they continue to hustle to get their voices out there.

Thanks to the fabulous @formidablemisscassidy for organising this book talk.

And TQ to indie bookstore @bookbarsg for being such a huge supporter of local voices!

🇸🇬 Happy National Day, Singapore

✨ Every August 9th, Singapore celebrates its National Day. Singapore is in its 61st year of independence from British rule. She’s come a long way.

📚 SingLit is a genre of literature written about and of Singapore or set in Singapore by local and international authors of Singaporean heritage. It’s a broad spectrum that also includes non fiction, and some of our books are studied in local schools. Many debate what SingLit is, if there’s such a thing and if it’s necessary, but I like to think that it’s canonical in its own right.

🏫 Home is a song composed by Dick Lee @dickleeparadise and you’re hearing the classical version. It is sung at every National Day Parade celebration since I can remember. For an overseas Singaporean like me, this song always brings me home.

🇸🇬 Wishing all Singaporeans home and abroad a very happy National Day!

Had the most amazing book launch for SONG OF THE YELLOW DRAGON last Saturday at the beautiful and cosy @bookbarsg ! This is my first novel published in the US, and it took me much sweat and tears to get here, so this launch will always be extra special to me.

Will let the pictures tell the story, and only add here that I was so touched by the support from family, friends and fans. Your presence meant everything to me, and your presents - a framed jigsaw puzzle of my book cover, a yellow dragon, balloons, and penguins! (because my book is published by Penguin Random House) - were so thoughtful and meaningful. Thank you. My heart is full.

Thanks to @melanderings for making the conversation so fun, and also to Book Bar and @times.reads for the incredible support!
