Brian Oakes Brian Oakes (they/them, born 1995) is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary sculptor known for pioneering a unique branch of “techno-craft.” A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA ’18), Oakes treats electronic hardware not just as a utilitarian tool, but as a vital artistic medium. Their complex, mechanical installations—often taking the shape of chandelier-like hanging light fixtures, kinetic dioramas, or non-functional display cases—frequently utilize custom printed circuit boards (PCBs), automated machinery, and raw industrial elements. Operating somewhere between an artist and a mad scientist, Oakes programs these physical devices to respond dynamically to their surroundings, generating ambient drone audio and light sequences without software. Through solo exhibitions like Seed (2024), Oakes explores the eerie intersections of big tech, predictive algorithms, global logistical networks, and human devotion, creating intricate artifacts that challenge how we define value in a hyper-mass-industrialized world. Link in bio. #BrianOakes #BrooklynArtist #ContemporarySculpture #ElectronicArt #KineticSculpture

Distribution Spotlight: Maggie Lee, WINGS2 (2013). WINGS2 will play at EAI this Thursday as part of EAI and Blade Study (@blade_study )’s event Rendered Instant, which centers artists and artworks investigating the threshold of human and computational perception. RSVPs are full—attendance will be first-come, first-served. More info at the link in our bio! In Lee’s video, the artist drinks a Red Bull—the Austrian energy drink that claims in its advertising campaigns that it will “give you wings”—against the backdrop of a 2013 ad for the beverage by cartoonist Horst Sambo. Unix time measures reality in non-leap seconds, accumulating without pause, a technical infrastructure that functions as our closest approximation of a universal now: a shared coordinate system where human perception and computational logic converge. Yet convergence does not constitute equivalence. The works assembled in this exhibition are computational, generative, or occupy both positions. Some execute continuously, producing output that exceeds any individual viewer’s capacity for reception. Others investigate the ontological gap between what machines can generate and what humans can meaningfully attend to. All operate within the productive tension between infinite generativity and finite attention.”
