ALTAR EGOS features Blaise DuBois’ series of digital prints that have been in process since mid-2020. Intertwining religious iconography, art historical themes and a personal visual vocabulary, Blaise engages viewers in a dialogue about modern figures of worship, and plays with their apparent duality. Referencing photographic imagery, the prints draw parallels to a tradition of propagandistic portraiture, both royal and religious, and utilize a uniquely layered, digitized style to express their currency. The portraits reveal ambiguity while underscoring humanity’s desire to elevate certain unusual individuals to a level of idolatry.
