Bathing in some Aperol 🍹

I knew Paris would be magical. I also knew that you can plan to see the sights but you can’t really plan for the magic. ✨

My sons Dante, Amadeus, and Blais found so many cool places - and more importantly - wonderful experiences.

Like visiting the Abbey Bookshop (and squeezing through the narrow aisles of bookshelves) and enjoying coffee and croissants at the Pli — while writing letters to our future selves. Like catching a show at Le Caveau de la Huchette and dancing, then walking outside to find Notre-Dame glowing in the night.

Like the bike tour with the best tour guide ever.

We stayed at a charming Airbnb with a balcony where we watched a rainbow stretch across the Paris rooftops and experienced what it might feel like living in Paris.

I loved walking down narrow streets and discovering little restaurants - and dining at the oldest Parisian restaurant Le Procope.

Bought baguettes and cheese to eat on a park bench. Brought wine and Cédric Grolet chocolates to the Eiffel Tower and watched it sparkle. ✨

And yes, we saw the grand Paris too — the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the architecture, history, and elegance that are everywhere.

But the magic was in all those moments we couldn’t have planned… and in getting to share them with Dante, Amadeus, and Blais.

Absolutely perfect. Magical. Unforgettable. ❤️🇫🇷

I waited to see France with someone special. But there was always something that prevented it from happening.

Earlier this summer, I finally decided to go. Alone. (Well… my son Blais is studying at SCAD Lacoste, so I knew I’d have someone pretty special waiting for me there. 😊)

Somewhere between the sunflower fields, old stone walls, long breakfasts, little villages and magical evenings, I realized something about the dreams we keep putting aside.

I wrote about this trip — about time passing, and about the someone special I did bring to France — in my latest short essay from the road.

If you enjoy stories about travel, music, life and the little things that teach us something along the way, I’d love to have you on my email list. (Link in bio - essay is on my Patreon).

And yes… France gave me another excuse to live in my @jmclaughlin pieces. 🇫🇷🤍

Next stop: Paris. ✈️
